When you hit 65, you must be enrolled in at least Medicare part A. You can use Tricare for eyes, hearing, doctors and meds if you are eligible

Medicare is not a mandatory program. However, part A is at no additional cost (I won't say free, because I've paid into this program since I was 17) and there are some severe cost penalties for not signing up for part B without creditable additional coverage. VA Drug program covers Part D. Tricare for Life is only available if you are Retired Military.

CPT Lawrence Cable - Currently under Law you are required to have some sort of health insurance or you will be fined by the IRS. Medicare A is provided free of charge( via taxes, true) there is no way of knowing the circumstances of the questioner except that they were a SP5 which died out in the 70.s.

Do I Need Medicare if I Have Veterans Benefits?
It's beneficial for eligible veterans to have both Medicare and VA coverage. This way, they have access to health care at many facilities.

VA Dallas is 'near-enough', been going there a few times previously. Am mostly healthyy, & had hoped to avoid Medicare costs, so will study for a least costly method. Thanks for talking about it!
