I will be going to a funeral of a good friend, and fellow soldier, and am curious to know what the common consensus is on what would be and wouldn't be appropriate.

Some background information/specifics on the situation: I do not know if the deceased will be buried in civilian or military attire, and I do not know what the other service members will be wearing while attending. The deceased was on active duty at the time of death, and died in garrison as part of a motorcycle accident. I still have my ASU uniform, stripped of the unit awards and shoulder DUI. I also have formal black civilian clothes which is what I am tentatively planning to wear.

So my question is this, if you were placed in my situation, what would you consider the appropriate choice of attire?
If you can still wear it appropriately, I'd wear that service dress uniform with pride. I don't think it attracts as much attention as you think, and I don't believe it to be disrespectful in any way. Quite the opposite actually.
Thank you again MSG Quick for pulling up the exact reg. I just know I would feel awfully awkward if I was wearing my ASU and most of the other attendees were wearing civies, but it's good to know that it's authorized per 670-1.
I've performed military honors for perhaps hundreds of our fallen brothers and sisters, and honestly, if this were me, I'd wear the black civilian suit. I'm sure your fellow soldier would have appreciated you wearing your dress uniform, but honestly, the day is about him and his life. Besides, there should be a fully dressed honor guard there to honor his military service, I'd let them do the military honoring. I know most of my deceased buddies would want me to just take it all in, mourn with the friends and family at the funeral and then celebrate the hell out of his life by remembering the good times with lots of drinks afterward. Just my opinion.

Personally, I would put my service dress uniform on.

Thank you MSgt for your opinion. It's good to see what everyone's thoughts on this are, especially those of other branches.
