My policy would be never let anyone on the installation know I owned firearms period and keep them off post. Sounds like we found an USSR policy and implemented it in the U.S. Military!

Agreed. We had to keep them in the unit armory unless we lived off the base, and they recorded all the pertinent info, plus you had to go get permission to remove your own property from there and explain exactly why you wanted it. It always seemed absurd to me.
So let me get this straight... you ISSUED me a high powered rifle AND ammunition, because I met certain character traits that cause me to be deemed worthy of that trust. Now, for some reason, that trust evaporates the moment you have a formation for Liberty and you can't trust me with my own firearm?
And believe me, I understand the reason these rules exist is because Marines did stupid things with them. That will always be the case. But I do not turn in my character when I turn in my issued rifle. I've always believed that if you treat Marines like boys, that is how they will act. Let's treat them like men (and women of course)

All Military should be armed... On and off duty. Your country needs to fight and protect its people from all enemies, foreign and domestic. Crime would go down and Law Enforcement / Public Safety / Security would benefit communities and lifestyles...

Without digging for references, the AF is the same. No POWs on billeting or dorms. (AF version of BEQ/Barricks). In on base housing, they have to be approved by your Commander and registered with the SFS (our version of the Provost). When pending approval, POWs are required to be stored in the SFS armory or off base.
