But remember this; while we have vets that are playing the "game" the "game" (VA) has been in business of playing vets for 60 years. And they've never had to make a fourth quarter come back drive like millions of vets have had to do, just to end up running the ball when they should've passed (VA has ALL of the Superbowl rings). I feel for those denied their proper benefits and I sincerely hope they get them in short order, but I think it's long time that we vets get Rodgers in the game to thrown that needed fourth and goal touchdown against the "patriotic" VA defense. About 5%. Yes, there will be jokers, but they will be rare (1 in 20).

However, and I need to stress this. The Dept of VA lawyers got LIT up by SCOTUS because their Appeal Overturn rate was better than 60%. The VA got it WRONG more than half the time initially, and that's in the wrong direction.

Now as to the specifics of your example, you also have to realize how "VA math" works.

100% disability for Hearing & Back, could mean something like: 80% Back + 50% Hearing, which will actually give you 90% (80% + 50% of the 20% remaining which gives you 90%)... however the VA "may" bump you to 100% if you have single ability above 70% and other abilities on top of it... The rules get super wonky.

Now it comes down to the actual questions.

People need to use the system. The more people that use the system, the better the system will be. The better it will be at finding the idiots. The better it will be at finding those in need.

I want the frauds to "try" and use the system. I want them to get caught. That's how we get a better system.

I would use the guy as an object lesson. I always tried to point out people who were important to my son. People who should be emulated. I also tried to point out those who should not be. There is a guy I know who tells me his son has problems. I say where was he ? He says doing secret stuff. The guy was a E-4 in Japan in the navy. His kid is out after 3 years or so and collecting for life because he can. On my third mob and have not filed yet. However when we process out the VA comes in and drills it into your head to file a claim. The system is geared toward failure and abuse Response by LCDR Mike S made Sep 14 at 2015 12:04 AM 2015-09-14T00:04:12-04:00 2015-09-14T00:04:12-04:00 COL Charles Williams 963845

I am 80% service connected disabled, and will likely be 100% when my appeals are finally considered SSG Richard Reilly. I was in the Army nearly 33 years, and after all that time, I had a lot of wear of tear.; most of us do. 100% disabled is a VA term, based on a cumulative accumulation issue by issue; it is also not simple addition. Neck, back, Knees, TBI, Eye injury (IED), and even health issues like sleep apnea and gastroparesis are all included. I have no veteran, DV, PH, or HC license plate, even though I could; nor would I ever. But, that is my choice.

Like SGT Kristin Wiley stated, I would be careful about judging. I was at Walter Reed one time visiting several of our WWs and on the way in I passed a WW would was moving fast on the way in. He had shorts and a tank on. Had he not, I would not be able to tell he had prosthetic legs and a prosthetic arm.

100%, 90%, 80% etc are VA terms based on the sum of many things.

I would be careful about judging, but the BS flag is your right. I also know many who work the system. Two for example, I know... could not deploy... but still run marathons and triathlons.... They are both 100% SC disabled.... I remember working as a federal contractor and working with some folks who were surprised that I didn't have disability coming in. If i made it through my time alright I'm certainly happy that I did. It bothers me that some will fake things or exploit the system in place. For example if I claim this it can not be verified and I'm guaranteed to get x...y...z compensation. For those who have service connected things use what's out there for you. For those who are making things up. I'd say knock it off. Response by SGT Steve Hines-Saich B.S. M.S. Yes, they are hurting the system. They are taking resources and money away from those who legitimately need it.
2. I absolutely care. I turned in a friend for fraud to the VA and Social Security. And see above.
3. I would tell my kids of my suspicions and why it's wrong. Let them decide if this guy is worth their time. Here's the problem: You don't seem to really know if he is on disability or what his real situation is so it's kind of hard to make such accusations. Personally, I'd arrange an impromptu discussion with both him and my kids and start asking questions - see what happens.

It's hard to get a 100% rating - I know because I've done it (I'm in the reserves). I'm also on social security disability. I've been med boarded, barely meet the minimum retention standards and have a permanent profile. The only reason I'm still in is because my commanders have been respectful of my situation and I still have something to offer. There is a chance he is telling the truth, rehabbed himself but has never reported his "improved" status. Have you reported him to the VA? They will look into it. That's my 2 cents.
