There's a vast gulf between those two situations. Having said that, negotiations are supposed to be underway. I would say that we don't really know enough as "out of the loop masses" for all of us to get comfortable with how things are going. Personally, I support the President, the administration, and all former regardless of political position. I feel this is my duty as a citizen regardless because we need each administration to succeed. They don't fail alone, we fail as a country. Foreign policy, constitutionally, has always been an area that America gives great discretion to the President. The laws are set up to support him that way and I don't have a problem with that. We are seeing for the first time in many years how America would deal with foreign policy with a tilt towards greater reliance on diplomatic approaches that do not involve as many overt military operations (or as many troops on the ground). Diplomacy is an escalation. With this approach as with military ones, there is much going on behind the scenes that cannot be put in the media for obvious security reasons. As such, we can't rely on the headlines. (We should probably never rely completely on the headlines) We have to rely on the intellect and abilities of our leadership and support them as best we can. Face it, this is the reality of democracy. It's not always pretty but it's the best the we know of. I think an issue here is that the masses are much less likely to challenge a military leader on what war approach to take than they are a civilian on which world issues to address first. They have no clue how and when troops should deploy and what they should do. It seems much more reasonable to question why we take one diplomatic approach in one country and a totally different one in another. The good news is that, regardless of your political bent or personal opinion, this is a forum where people care. The reality is that many of the masses do not.
