As a newly sworn in member of the Army and a 91B wheeled vehicle mechanic, what vehicles did you work on?

I have searched and can not find a good list of vehicles the army actively has so I want to ask any former 91B's what you mostly worked on. I am so excited about being a 91B. I am a huge gearhead.

Literally anything with wheels. I was a 63W back in the day, heavy wheel mechanic. We worked on HMMWVs in their many varieties, LMTVs in their many varieties, now-a-days I imagine it includes all the new blast vehicles MRAPs all its cousins and even strykers (but I do believe those have a dedicated MOS as well).

I worked on a variety of vehicles that the military no longer has, 1/4 tons Jeeps were fun to work on. M151A3.

Good choice of MOS, I was infantry and only thing I worked on was my combat boots, they worked well and took me everywhere. But I always admired the guys that work with a AVR, to retrieve the armor.

I originally joined the Army to be a mechanic. I absolutely loved it! I am naturally a gear head as well. Mostly you will be just changing parts. Stay hungry and apply for a SOF unit where you can really use your hands and head. Good luck!

If it has Wheels it is something you will work on However what you work on depends on where you get Assigned and what they support TOE wise, so really depends on the Unit your assigned to.

My best advice, be prepared to be a MECHANIC, period. If it has a combustible engine, you will touch it and work on it at some point in your career. I’ve worked on generators, heaters, reefer units, backhoes, Toyota Land Cruisers, Tacoma, and hilux (desiel Tacoma), Polaris MRZR, M850 (Polaris ATV), Polaris switchback (snowmobiles), mraps, literally everything that comes your way that has to deal with mechanics you should have a general knowledge of. As a current 91B, I have worked on every wheeled vehicle the Army has come to own, the biggest one and the one that I have worked on so far would have to be all HMWWV's. Although, you are a 91B, it does not mean that you will go to units with just those wheels, you may end up in Stryker land, needing to learn that portion, and yes it is its own MOS. I have also worked on every track vehicle, again as a 91B. The unit's don't recognize you just as your a wheel mechanic, but they see it as an option to teach and train those soldiers, because you never know what is going to happen in this world. Each mechanical field will always need assistance so its good you learn and broaden your mindset to help your fellow battles.

As a 91B you will work on vehicles from HMMWV size to HETs. Depending on the type of unit you're in, you may also work on APCs, construction equipment, generators, and the unit's lawnmower, snowblower, and weed whackers.
I started as a 63D (now called 91P). When I first started at my unit, my motor SGT told me to go fix a truck. I said,"That's not my MOS, I'm a track mechanic". That was when I learned that as far as your unit is concerned, you are a mechanic, and will maintain whatever needs to be maintained.
Don't fight it. You'll get a wider range of experience if you're willing to work on everything, experience that will help you in the civilian world, or in the Army should you choose to re-up.

PVT Private RallyPoint Member these are the vehicle families. There are variants within the family of vehicles. The HEMTT has cargo, load systems, tractors, tankers, most importantly for you, a wrecker variant M984E. Same with the FMTV family except the wrecker is worthless. Would rather have a M936 WW wrecker. You may still find 900 series 5 tons in the field. The M998series HMMWV have tons of variants that should be replaced by the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle when they finally field those later in the century. The 998 series are cargo utility, contact trucks, shelter carriers, ambulances, TOW carriers, etc.

HMMVs, HEMMTS, FMTVs, water buffalos, trailers, hell I even had to service a water cooler before.

Expect anything most common would probably be the FMTV (family of medium tactical vehicles) the HMMWV and the HEMMIT platform but don't think that is inclusive if worked on generators, pressure washers, excavators, backhoes, bulldozers, lads, shower units, just about anything that runs on fuel they will ask you to fix best advise I can give you is be flexible and learn to use a TM even if you know what your doing as a mechanic beforehand there is still a lot of good information in the books

Depends on where you go and what their mission is. I was in a transportation unit and we had HMMWVs, LMTVs, PLSs, HEMMTs, and HETs. Now their mission is also gun trucks, so they have up armored HMMWVs and MATVs, MRAPs, etc.

Depends on your unit. I'm in a PLS Trans Company, so I work on a lot of PLSs, but I also work on HEMMTs, HMMWVs, and LMTVs. I have buddies I went to AIT with, who only work on LMTVs or HMMWVs because of their unit type.

Well it is going to depend on your unit assignment. There are 6 total units with the Hetts 2 National Guard and the rest Army. My old unit has the record for safety and most miles driven through Iraq. 14 million miles, going from the load points in Kuwait and all over Iraq. The Hetts are the trucks that can haul the Bradleys and anything else you may possibly need. Uses a gooseneck trailer where all the axles turn. The newer Hetts have a longer cab where the back seat converts to bunks and 4 door instead of the old 2 door set up. CTIS on all the cab tires. Awesome vehicle! The new contact trucks that held all of our tools were pretty awesome as well. It was a humvee that only had the front seats and the back stripped off and in its place is a huge roll cage box that held all of our tools in foam cut out trays across the sides. The back opened up and we had our parts, welding, and torches in there. Awesome set up. You knew where everything was and if something was missing with just a quick look. The Hemmitt wreckers and fuel trucks we had as well as the duces and some pick ups. Being in a tansportation unit gives you the opportunity to work on all kinds of vehicles. We as the maintenance section installed air ride seats in our vehicles! Made for a much smoother ride. We also built radio boxes for each vehicle so we could listen to music while on haul missions.

Depends on where you are going...what company you will be with... I know of some counterparts that landed with a Battalion staff and supported 3Hmmwv’s and that’s it. I’ve been between transportation companies for 12years and have supported upwards of 300 pieces of “wheeled” equipment in a single unit. Hmmwv’s, FMTVs, HETs, PLS/LHS, MRAPs(MATV) etc

Where I was stationed I worked on everything fromK-cars to 44 pass. buses. Mostly civilian stuff painted army green or puke green. Bu that was because of where I was stationed and the Co. I was in. And I am assuming that 91B is what 64B has turned into. But most of its pretty easy and not much more than replacing parts if they say u are at the level to work on whats wrong.
