As SrA John Monette says, we have a Space Command, and we could just expand that. Complete reorganizations seldom solve the problems we think they will and often cause more bloat in resources for little added gain (such as DHS for example). While I don't like the spending of more money or the militarization of space, it's coming regardless. The Chinese space program is operated by an arm of the people's liberation army. China is already in the process of militarizing space. The only response is to get ready for future conflict in space. If we don't, our enemies will. I think that the airforce should change over to the space force and the airforce should be a subordinate branch to the space force, much like the Marines being subordinate to the Navy. Having the Air Force deciding what percentage of their budget gets spent on things my branch needs to survive and do my job, is about as popular in my mind as them saying the F-35 can do the roll of the A-10. Now I am older than dirt, and might be out of touch with reality, but I have not heard a lot of troops who have had their lives saved by A-10's, sound thrilled at all the attempts by the Air Force to get rid of them. All the branches have space assets, it's just a matter of consolidating them and funding them. It's similar to when SOCOM was created to consolidate all the various special operations of each of the branches. It will allow the space mission to be focused on one single mission as opposed to each service's interpretation and need of the mission.
