General rule is the best station is the one you are going to and the worst one is the one you just left. But honestly, every station is what you make it. FT Irwin, in the middle of the California desert, was pretty good. Germany was bomb.com. Missouri and Texas....too dam hot and humid for my taste

You got me there. My duty stations and deployments had me pretty busy. I'd remember going to Pearl or San Diego and feeling like this wasn't the real Navy I was used to. I TDY'd places which had Navy billets that I loved, but they were always out of cycle. Those would include Christchurch, Singapore, and UK.

It's really what you make of it.

You may love a duty station that someone hates and you may hate one that someone loves. I image there are people who HATE Hawaii but would love Fort Drum for example.

Hands down Rota, Spain. Only spent 6 weeks there but it was amazing. Great base, work center, co-workers, setting. Off duty time: Locals were fantastic people, a few hours west - Portugal, a few hours east - Gibraltar. Everything in between was outstanding.

Depends on your needs and lifestyle. I was stationed at Scott AFB (20 minutes from St Louis) which was great for the folks that liked the trappings that a city brings. Another duty station was in the middle of nowhere, the closet town had 75 people in it. But the fishing and hunting in the area was great. For off-duty, I loved Germany the best, but my job sucked. For my working environment, my current duty station is very nice.

Most were Great but for Different Reasons but if I had to rank my Tops Ones. Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station, Diego Garcia, British Indian Ocean Territory would have to be #1. Naval Security Group Detachment, Sugar Grove, WV would be #2. Naval Communications Unit, London, UK Would be #3. Honorable Mentions would go to Commander Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command Washington, DC and CINCPACFLT Pearl Harbor, HI.

Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (DLIFLC) was my best duty station due to the location. You have Monterey and Carmel and I was 1 1/2 hour from where I grew up and enlisted.

The rest of my duty stations were rewarding and I made the best for each location.

Any station can be the best for you, its up to you. Everyone dislikes Fort Polk, LA but I made the best of it and loved being there. So really its what you make of it. Generally speaking the best post is where you just left and the worst place is where you are currently at.

I really enoyed my time at Fort Riley. Not only does it have a lot of rich tradition behind it (Big Red One, Patton, cavalry), but it is a great family post. The people are friendlier than most other places I have been to. (So far seven posts and counting). Kansas State University is just down the road. And if you don't have a family, there is a four block bar district. It's in the record books as the highest density per block in the world.

I was in 6.5 years, had 3 duty stations. Bad Krueznauch, Germany was by far the best, Ft. Lewis second and Polk was the armpit and without a doubt the worst.

For me it was the Naval Hospital in Orlando Florida in the 80's. As a young Corpsman it had everything that makes a duty station special, from fishing in the many lakes to surfing and diving in the ocean. My job in the emergency room was 12 hours shifts so I had no "duty" to stand. The job also included covering the Space Shuttle launches by ambulance that where happening monthly at Cape Canaveral until the Challenger disaster happened. Boot camp for females was also there & that meant plenty of opportunities for dates as a young sailor! All said during my 6 years of active duty, Naval Hospital Orlando was hands down the best from my perspective!

Sp4 Byron Skinner. Easy Ft. Meade. (deployment base for 11ACR 08/66) Close to DC, Philly and NYC. The boomtown (Odenton Md.) just off post, cheap liquor, no ID asked for, and plenty of short time girls. For a 19 yr. old 11B headed for Nam, it was all he could ask for. Worst, Camp Pickett (now Ft. Pickett) no liquor after midnight Saturday and some of the ugliest short time grills in any boom town (Blackstone Va.) Most over rated Ft. Dix New Jersey. The boom town Wrightstown has all of the charm of a southern trailer park and the women all have just as bad teeth.

One of the best I had been at was Ft. Devens, MA. that was a small post just outside of Boston. It was just a short drive to Vermont, Delaware and other states to do some really good skiing. Ft. Ord, CA was very good also, located on the Monterrey Bay. It was within driving distance to L.A. to the south and S.F. to the north. Also not too far from the Mountains for great skiing during the winter.

Each duty station has different variables. I loved Drum because of the people. I loved Stewart because it was close to home and the beach. I LOVED CARSON because of scenery and outdoor activities. I am now stationed in Germany, and I love traveling.

For me it was Ft Campbell, KY as superintendent of an airborne AF Special Operations Weather Team. We were geographically separated from the AF so noone breathing down our necks and the Army had no administrative control over an AF unit. Comraderie and morale was awesome!!!

All around best duty station I had was Osan AB South Korea as a member of the 31 SOS. Once a month we had a White Knight Black Knight ceremony were we made a gauntlet and heckled the new guys as they approached the commander and first shirt. At that point they got down on one knee as a group and were knighted into the unit by the commander and then presented their unit coin by the shirt. Before this event the officers would bring 3 kegs of beer for the enlisted which were promptly floated and after the ceremony the officers drove everyone to the front gate were we went to the unit bar to do a rotor head and then go bar hopping.

Every single enlisted or officer could go to the entire command staff at anytime since our unit was a combined flying and maintenance unit.

Mannheim, West Germany was good(In the summer Southern Germany was excellent). Berlin(West and East) was something else.. Lichfield (Clay?)Barracks there, had the best chow, better than USAF bases.

Everyone wanted to do Hawaii, I never made it. There was only one tank battalion there at the time.(85-89)

SPC(P) Private RallyPoint Member, Fort Rucker, AL was my first duty station. It was a lot of fun and I loved it there. I was one of less than a half-dozen lower enlisted members in a battalion with more than 4,000 Officers and 2,000 Warrant Officers. I never pulled duty once. Never worked past COB. Never worked on a weekend.

It was the worst possible place to send a brand new private out of AIT. Absolutely terrible for my professional development. It taught me nothing but bad attitude, bad work ethic, and worse habits. I cannot tell you how much I wish I had been sent to a divisional line unit in a terrible location.

There is no "best". Every station has something unique to offer and different people have different tastes. For me, the posts that I enjoyed the most were Ft Carson and Yongsan. Ft Sam Houston rounds out my top 3.

I grew to like Ft. Bragg very much, but the best post I was ever stationed at was Ft. Ord (and later the Presidio of Monterey). Monterey, the beach, California...even the unit was good. Was sorry to leave it when it closed.

I have been stationed during my enlisted time and officer time at Ft Sam Houston, TX; Vicenza, Italy; FAMC Aurora, CO; Ft Campbell, KY; Ft Gordon, GA; Ft. Sill, OK, and Ft Bliss, TX and have been TDY to Bragg, Benning, and Leonard Wood. They all have their ups and downs. Sometimes the base sucked but there was really nice living/eating/recreating outside the base (like Gordon and Augusta area), sometimes the base and outside area sucked but the job/work environment was awesome (Ft Sill), some were nice all around (Italy and CO). But this is all subjective and what you do with the assignment, the actual job environment, your friends and family, your command, etc, etc, make a big difference on your perception of how great this place is.

No longer available, but Berlin, Germany was amazing! Near the end, they had something worked out with the local transit system and you could ride anywhere in West Berlin just by showing your military ID (that included dependents also), plus the transit system included boats on the lakes. There was a ton of history in the area. Access to East Berlin was somewhat restricted, but it was very eye-opening to see what life was really like in a socialist paradise. It was fairly easy to get out to West Germany, and the AFRC sites were a big plus. Travel around Europe was relatively cheap and quick. We had reciprocal agreements with the Brits and French, so visiting their facilities was fun. The French O-club was amazing, and both of their PX/Commissaries had some good/interesting choices available. If you could deal with the fact that you were surrounded by a Wall and in the middle of GSFG, it was an exciting place to be.

Rose Barracks, Vilseck, Germany. Bavaria is beautiful, German beer is fantastic (love me some Helles), Fests all year round, Nurnberg 1 hour away, Munich about 2.5 hours away, and you have Italy, Czech Republic, Austria, and Switzerland all within easy driving distance. And Ryan Air flies out of Nurnberg, so really all of Europe is within an 80 Euro plane ticket.

The very best? Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. Sometimes called "Redstone Rest Home" it is home to all of the military ground-to-air ADA MOS classes. I was there twice as a student then again as an Instructor for 24K. No formations, just show up at your class. No PT tests, this is a post for your intellectual types. And Huntsville has the highest % of Ph.D's for any city of the same size. Beautiful too, this is where Werner Von Braun chose to bring his missile techs from Germany as it more closely resembled his homeland than anywhere in the USA....

Germany was killer for me. Was on brig duty there and only 4 of us on the whole base. Did tons of travelling there. But while working in a jail in not for everybody, it did teach me how to deal with people who are not in the most ideal situations.

Best duty station for me (Bar none) was the 18th Artillery in Kilkis Greece. Wonderful people, great food, and since I lived off of the base, great bennies.

USS Supply AOE6 was my best. The command even as it changed stayed great. The crew was there for one another and into getting the job done well and getting off. No screwing us around when we were in port they were all about the liberty, being a supply ship we were haze grey quite often, but loved that as well.

Philadelphia Navy Yard as Leading Seaman on the Admiral's Barge. Half and hour from my girl, easy duty, great chow. Unfortunately, it lasted only three months. Then off to GTMO as a disk jockey for AFRTS.

For me I really think it was Marine Detachment, U.S. Disciplinary Barracks, Ft. Leavenworth, KS. from June 1980 to June 1982. Then my last assignment before retirement with 1st Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Camp Pendleton, CA. from July 1982 to June 1985.

I was with the 4th Engineer Bn. at Ft. Carson for about a year and a half, and it was the worst unit that I served with in my entire military career. The Colorado Springs area was beautiful, and nice, but the fort didn't have enough on post housing. As I stated, the unit that I was in was "a wreck"

I was all set to say Rota, Spain due to it being my first duty station where I learned a lot and saw much of Europe from there. But, while on the Admiral's staff, I lived in a penthouse apartment and met my wife in Bahrain. It would be very hard for me to choose between the two.

Naval Amphibious Base Coronado, COMPHIBPAC Staff. Beautiful beaches in Coronado, beautiful women. It doesn't happen often but the Navy forgot about me. Was on a one year assignment, stayed three years. Caught up with me and sent me to a WW II supply ship, Westpac cruise, no A/C, nothing but heat and misery.

Well, here's another General Rule (and in my opinion more true) - any duty station where you hate your boss is the worst duty station of your life even if it is in paradise (cause when you hate going to work).. and conversely, any duty station where you really like and respect your boss (and the people around you), can become your favorite duty station of all time - even if you should be expected to hate the location.

Best duty station I ever had was Randolph AFB, TX. One lone Army flight detachment in the middle of an Air Force base. The thing that made it great was when I signed in, it was almost lunch time. The Detachment Sergeant told me, "Take the rest of the day off and come back tomorow morning." I replied that I'd had travel time, 30 days leave, and 10 days house-hunting and was ready to get back to work.
His reply? "You don't understand...unless you're flying, we don't work past noon here."

Purely subjective. For me, it was every single base I was stationed at. Reason why: I made the most of each place. Look for the positive instead of the negative. Don't be a barracks rat. Get out and experience the locality where ever you go. Regardless, always always always have a plan and be safe.

Redstone Arsenal, AL / Huntsville. Served in Frankfort, Germany, S. Korea, Ft. Dix & Ft. Bliss. RSA for AIT then back there as Instructor. 24K Improved Hawk (CW) Missile System. Moved back to Huntsville after ETS, promoted to Regional Manager for Universal Data Systems with the 7 Rocky Mountain states then back to Huntsville AGAIN. It is now are LARGE city....

My Dad was in the Navy for 20 years, I was in the Navy for 6 years, and the Air Guard for 16, did a lot traveling around as a kid, and as an adult. Best place for me while in the service.. Ceciel Field, Jacksonville Fla., VA-172, we would deploy on the USS Franklin D Roosevelt,...and as the son of a Chief "Boats", San Diego, where I was born! Between my Dad and I, we have 42 years in, and a lot of trips around the world!

For myself it's a tie between Fort Carson, CO and Schweinfurt, GE.

The best thing about Fort Carson is that if you complain about having nothing to do in your free time, you really aren't trying at all. No matter what you like to do in your free time, there is something for you at Fort Carson.

Schweinfurt was great too but unfortunately it closed down due to budget cuts.

A lot of people never knew that we had personnel stationed in Greece, but in all of the tours that I had in 23 years, Greece was the best assignment I had. Based in Athens, and performed inspections on the northern sites. Great tour of duty.

The Best is usually the one where you spend your pivotal years being groomed to become a Leader. Then it either changes or stays the same depending on whether you move or not when you get those Chevrons ! i always found enjoyment at any duty station i was at though (only was at two), because part of our duty as Soldiers is to help foster and build upon the Esprit De Corps. Soldiers make the unit, not the name or location.

Being in Ranger Regiement we only have 3 choices for duty stations and that's our only downside. However, after leaving the congested and seemingly boring Fort Benning, I PCSd to Hunter Army Airfield, GA down in Savannah. There's a beach, historic downtown, college women, Jacksonville, Charleston, Hilton head, and still close enough to Atlanta if you want the Fortune 500 feel. Saldly I'm about to leave the Regiment and thus PCS away from this great place...don't know where to go next but I hear Germany is nice. I just want to end up somewhere that will allow me to grow once I make E-7 which will help me become a better Warrant Officer once I submit my packet.

Really depends on you. Many that were the "best" by all concerned due to climate, geography, wow factor, hipness of civilian community, were the ones I absolutely hated because the duty sucked. Many, including my first duty station Ft Irwin CA, were thought to be the worst, were the absolute best largely because of the people and the duty.

Do you like hot or cold? No problem, the Army can dynamically alter weather to have it suck on demand.

Any duty assignment is what you make it. The ones I really enjoyed:
1. Fort Irwin CA. May be its Stockholm Syndrome setting in or maybe it is nostalgia. Being OPFOR was a great experience in the era of Maneuver warfare.
2. Camp Humphreys ROK. I enjoyed Korea and felt it was worthwhile duty despite being a newly wed. This was before it was a built out mega FOB.
3. Heidelberg Germany. Sorry kids, no way to get there as anything but a tourist, which I would recommend. I was in a NATO unit and seeing the world. Closed under SECDEF Rumsfeld, thanks Donny.
4. Picatinny Arsenal. Incredible people. Hard to get to unless you are Acquisition or EOD....or the Garrison Command team.
5. Newport Naval Station. Unless you are a Navy Surface Warfare guy or at the Naval War College, hard to get to.

I got to say it was a small airfield just outside of Vicensa, Italy. Across the field at the civilian entrance was a mom&pop restaurant that had fresh baked bread and home made spaghetti. The sauce was just fantastic. While most Americans would just stay in the airfield, I traveled to Rome and saw Vatican. Saw a performance of Romeo and Juliet (it's based on a true story) performed at the very houses. The balcony scene made feel like a voyeur.

I was stationed at Heathrow Airport UK. Small detachment civilian clothing authorized as work uniform, it was the bomb. An amazing assignment spent 2 years there. Wish i could of stayed longer. London was a very fun place to explore. Been trying to save up to get back to visit. But airfare is rediculious now a days.
