Boxing is it worth 100 million dollars?

I have mixed feelings about the boxing match last night. I get these guys have spent a life time of training and fighting and damaging their bodies, its not something I'd ever be able to do. On the other hand 100million dollars for it... I don't know, I just think there are people in our society that are more deserving in what they do then a boxer for such money.

If what I heard about last nights fight is true then I would have to say absolutely not. I had a friend go to watch the fight and he among others all said that Mayweather spent 10 rounds running from Manny and still won the fight. IF and I say IF this is true then Mayweather should get the lower end of the purse for turning track star. I would much rather spend/waste $50 on watching the comedy that is the WWE.

LCpl Mark Lefler, it certainly wouldn't be worth it to me. I don't even watch it. Many of the boxers lose much of their winnings because of unscrupulous "hangers on" and some have their brains turned to Jell-O because of all the pounding. Then there's the corruption factor, which I like to think has been has been significantly diminished, but who knows for sure?

I think it's telling that a spectacle like this could gross so much money when many important charities can't raise as much as the combined purse of $300 million in years.

That being said, Floyd fought to not lose, making it a rather boring match. I admire Floyd's defensive skills and speed, but I don't know how or why somebody who fights to not lose can make so much money for running and hugging.

Not in a day when teachers, doctors, nurses, public servants like law enforcement and fire fighters, and the military (and countless other professions) make less for doing/sacrificing more. It just goes to prove the greed of society and the emphasis on the dollar.

I think that the money in sports and entertainment borders on the obscene.

I don't begrudge the people who pursue it, but somehow I just think we are wrong in how we support things.

Anyone want to compare this to how much the folks who have just been drafted will receive before ever competing in an NFL game?

It's a Subjective vs Objective issue and a "what the market will bear" issue.

Although we "individually" may not believe the fight was worth $100M, "collectively" it became so.

As a counterpoint. A can of coke is worth about $0.50 individually. Collectively however... When you go into a theater and get one, we pat $3-5.00, however it is the highest profit item in the place, and the cup costs more (generally) than the soda itself. Again, what the market will bear.

So we have to take away arguments about "deserving" because we as individuals have decided that they deserve our $100.00 each, just like we decided the movie theater deserved our $5 over the convenience store down the street. It's not the fighters fault for developing a marketable skill, and any "control" we could place on said skill would be ineffective in actually diverting money to those who actually are deserving in a truly Objective fashion.

As far as I am concerned, none of the professional athletes (any sport) are worth the money that they are paid. PERIOD. At the end of the day, all they are doing is playing a damn game that has no real world consequence.

I will give the same argument that my Dad gave me when I was a kid when I told him what my baseball cards were worth. They are worth whatever you can get somebody to pay for them. Did I watch the fight, yes. Only because I am deployed and it was shown on AFN, I would never pay for a fight. It just isn't worth it to me. To each their own.

Sorry but no - Sports athletes get paid way to much. 100 million to beat the hell out of each other with padded gloves - No take the gloves off - bare fisted no rounds- just let them go at it...winner gets all 100% of the purse - the other better have good health insurance.

You know what is funny about this whole thing - Men are fighting for a "Purse" a "Belt" fashion accessory and in team sports they are fighting for a "Ring." Think about it.....

Late response...the boxers who earn millions have experience and branding as a star. There are many athletes who fight in local places for a peanut salary and must have day jobs.
