Can a veteran wear their service uniform with facial hair?

I am planning on wearing my uniform to an appropriate event but have since grown a beard. I have looked for he answer in AR670-1 and 10 USC 772 but can not find the answer any help would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't looked at the regs, just my own standards: If you put the uniform on, then get to standards. I will not wear my uniform again because I have a beard and don't want to shave. I see no problem wearing medals on a suit/tux to this function which is perfectly ok. Listen the admin POGS took this down as I posted it earlier.

Frankly, I'm not sure about Army regs on this, but contrary to Robert DeNiro in the "Deer Hunter", not being in grooming regs when you put on your uniform puts you in the same category visually as a bum on the corner wearing a cammie coat. I personally assume anyone out of grooming regs to be a stolen valor warrior

The book answer is no. If you wear the uniform as a veteran for an appropriate event, you are supposed to adhere to all uniform standards (height, weight, grooming etc.).

This paragraph applies to anyone wearing the uniform to include veterans and retirees, since Chapter 23 allows no difference or flexibility for wear of the uniform by retirees or former members of the Army (veterans). SGM Mikel Dawson has the right idea.

The 10 USC 772 sends you to 32 CFR Part 53 (reserve component) when looking at former members of the armed forces.

AR 670-1 Chapter 23. Para 23-2
(4) When attending social functions or informal gatherings of a military character. All current and former Soldiers will conform to the wear and appearance standards in this regulation while wearing the uniform under the provisions of this chapter.

I last wore my uniform to my brother's military funeral. I too have a beard, which I grew immediately on my retirement from the service, some 15 years ago.
I didn't question the regs. I personally think beards should be allowed in the Military, but regs are regs. I shaved my beard without hesitation, wore my uniform with pride, and re-grew my beard in just a few weeks. It was no big sacrifice.
BTW -- I kept my "regulation mustache" which predates the beard by decades.

This simple answer is NO (Except a mustache that is within standards) USAF AFI36-2903 and also Army Regulation AR670-1, Paragraph 30-4 both state the uniform can only be worn if it meets the standards that were required while You were still serving. Also both state You must meet the grooming and weight standards that are required of those still serving. That is the standard for all branches of the armed Forces. The standard does not change for uniform wear because You are a Veteran or retiree of the US Armed Forces. You can wear the uniform that was issued while You served as long as it still meets the standards that were in effect during that time of service. There are still some restrictions on when the uniform can be worn also, Military appropriate functions are fine, never on political events ! I hope that answers Your question.

If one is going to wear their uniform after service, everything needs to be held to AR 670-1 standards. Last I checked, we took an oath I know I still uphold. I keep some growth on my face, but haven't worn mine for at least 4 years ago. Keep the standard, exceed the minimum.

I'll offer up some counterpoint just to complete the picture. Army types seen to be more reg focused than other services. There's a reg for everything and they spend a career following them. So the official answer is no. The practical answer is if you do, who cares and what can they do? For the most part nobody and for the second answer, nothing. That said, it's a matter of how you feel about it. I've been out a long time but like my profile picture shows, I'm "legal" when I put on a uniform. After 32 years, it's the only way I know how to do it. I have a beard now. However I don't shave it to wear a BDU cover to put flags on Vet graves. I'm just too used to wearing a cover when I salute my fallen comrades. If some punk ass tells me about not liking what I'm wearing, an ass chewing will ensue. Don't tell me how I grieve my lost shipmates. Bottom line, up to you but look sharp.

I don't even need to look up the regs...I remember seeing several retirees, they were talking about how they had to. They were reading another retiree the riot act because he didn't shave. Many members of my VFW post, which is 100% community service based(no bar) wear beards and while wearing their Class A's. They aren't subject to any UCMJ laws. These former service members do 5-10 funeral honor guards a week, Eagle Scout ceremonies, community service and education, school functions and the list goes on and on. They do this all on their own dime. The 670-1 is a suggestion for retired service members, not a requirement. These former war time servicemembers bring great honor to the military, regardless if they are not in current height-weight or grooming standards.

I would wear my beard with my uniform if I were in Afghanistan... which is where this picture was taken... Every time I and the guy in this picture went to Afghanistan we wore beards so... now that he is retired and visiting Afghanistan as a combat wounded warrior (double amputee in Afghanistan) on a goodwill tour if he didn't wear a beard he'd look out of place and most of his friends there wouldn't recognize him. So end of a long story, some people are more special than others... in fact it says so on our uniforms :p

Found in Section 30.4 Page 315

Applies to Gender Both

a. Unless qualified under another provision of this regulation, or under the provisions of section 772, title 10, United States Code (10 USC 772), former members of the Army may wear the uniform if they served honorably during a declared or undeclared war, and if their most recent service was terminated under honorable conditions. Personnel who qualify under these conditions will wear the Army uniform in the highest grade they held during such war service, in accordance with 10 USC 772.

This is the guy you are questioning. He is not some POG that decided to put on a uniform and pretend he was something he isn't. The best advice you can receive is, do your research before calling someone out on something. I know him personally and I can promise you, he doesn't disrespect the uniform, the Army or the country. MSG Corbin is the Soldier that most in the Army can only pretend to be. Just clarifying this, you have a lot of guys on here who haven't got a clue who they are talking about yet, throw out terms like "Stolen Valor", well, I am pretty sure they may not have been allowed to wear a beard while in uniform but, I know for a fact he was allowed to.

I personally would not have this problem as my uniform must have shrank since my release in 1999 and I can no longer wear it...but, my opinion is if you are going to wear the uniform after whatever type separation you have, follow the regs. The only exception I might see is if you wear your camo for some recreation type activity. Just remove the patches....rank, US ARMY tape, etc.

I used to wear a Slant Pocket Vietnam Era jacket when I was in high school, I had John Lennon Length hair at a time when men's hair styles were either short and loaded with hair gel or a mullet where as I looked like I was trapped in 1968.
If you want to wear a military uniform and beard in a way that absolutely no one can object to you've got to think outside the box... Civil War Union Uniform! Think about it, side burns that could choke a donkey, a beard as long as McClellan is tall and Mutton Chops so large that they can straddle the Mason-Dixon Line and would still leave enough room to provide shade for yourself, Both General George Meade and Joseph Hooker as well as

I concur with Chief Keck, I was asked to do a last call for a friend who had passed. I grew my beard right after Retirement and shaved for this occasion. Beards do grow back, it was an honor to attend and be a part in uniform.

The uniform is a representation of pride and professionalism and should always reflect that. Hair, any hair, becomes part of the uniform when you wear it. So, get your hair cut to standard, shave the beard, and grow it back when the event is over.

Only Team Guys can wear there uniform with beard down range only. If they are state side & getting ready to return back down range is allowed. If you are n’t a team guy you need to follow Army standards is very simple & comment cents. I've been to some functions where there were retired officers with beards, and one with a ponytail, wearing their mess jacket with a Scottish kilt! Since I have a beard and have gained a massive amount of weight I would never wear a uniform. I do wear miniatures on a tux on occasion.

Does anyone know if MSG Corbin was in the Tikrit ODA during OIF 06-07? It says he was 3BCT 82d, which was my Brigade when I was in. We used to run missions with those guys. I was so jealous of them, they had an M-249 AND an M240B in their turrets, as well as an AT4, and some still had M79s. I was a turret gunner for most of those 15 months, so I was on see of their weaponry. We also got mortared on their compound, and between those ODA guys and the Peshmerga that neighborhood was lit up like Christmas!

The Reg is the Standard. AR 670-1 clearly states what you can and can’t do with facial hair. Even if you have a profile. You wouldn’t be able to exceed 1/4 inch (I believe). Just to be safe and to honor the uniform. Just shave. Grow it back later.

Before I transitioned I would ALWAYS shave and get a good military haircut for any occasion when I felt my Class A's were the proper attire. For me, it was getting a good military haircut that affected me most. After I transitioned I gave my Class A's to my present VFW Post Commander as it was no longer an appropriate uniform for me. I would love to get a female Service Uniform but at present can not afford one so now I either wear my VFW Color Guard Uniform or my VFW Officer's Blue's and Gray's.

Fuck AR670-1, my civilian ass no longer has to abide by those micro-managing regulations. I took my granddaughter to her 1st daddy daughter dance last year Ive been out a little while over 3 years at the time I had a beard and decided to shave it off to wear my dress blues (probably for last time) I was always proud to wear my uniform in regulation while I was in and beleive I should keep in regulation even though Im out its all about pride for me. She was so happy that night would do it again in a heartbeat!

I too have grown a beard since retiring and should I ever have occasion to try to squeeze by enlarged ass into a uniform again I would just shave. It takes no time at all to grow a beard, for me anyway. In the long run it’ll probably save you some grief from someone trying to claim stolen valor because you have a beard.

The most seen unit in the US Army is the Old Guard. Google their photos. That is the example and standard that anyone who wears the uniform regardless of what the reg says. Thats how its been thats how it is and should always be. Dont disrespect the uniform that so many are eternally sleeping in

I have a friend that wears his uniform with a beard when he has to. I myself shave and get a haircut when I wear one. I'll be doing it again when my wife and I get married in The Catholic Church (we're civilly married but church only recognizes the sacramental marriage) and when our son is baptized. One thing I do when I wear my uniform though is I don't wear leader tabs or crests on my shoulder boards, I'm not in a unit. If you decide to wear a beard then shape and clean it up. Don't look like a bum or a mountain man that put on a uniform.

I as a U S Army retiree, fully agree with the sentiments that have been expressed. If you had pride in your service, you should still have that pride. If you want to wear the uniform, meet the established standards.
Not only am I a retiree, but I wore the uniform 21 additional years as a JROTC INSTRUCTOR. Retired from that in 2011. I like my mustache longer than regulations, and I wear hair under my bottom lip. But every time I go to a military function, I like to wear the uniform. So, I cut my hair, trim my mustache, and shave. That happens at least annually. But sometimes more often. Why? Pride in the uniform. Not to brag, but I have enough suits (and I have my own Tuxedo), to change every day for a month or more. But my dress blues are my best clothes.

The answer is no per AR 670-1 (without some pre-authorized exception to policy). However, its non-enforceable because Army Regulations (and the UCMJ) no longer apply to you. So if you did it, you may get some funny looks or remarks from Service members, but you wouldn't be breaking any laws/regulations that could create any real legal issues for yourself. An example of this are the countless vets you see at parades, VFWs, American Legions, etc., who often wear all or part of their old service uniforms, but may not conform to current grooming standards. Of course, most of these guys are much older WWII, Korea, and Vietnam vets who no one would dare to question.

Bottom line: If I were you and wanted to wear my service uniform when I got out for an event, I would simply conform to the regulation even though you would not get into any *official* trouble for it.

When you are an off duty civilian, the uniform regulations do not apply to you, same with the UCMJ. Wear your uniform however you wish. US Code Title 10 allows for you to wear your uniform as a veteran at your own discretion. Obviously respect the uniform. The commanding officer of SEAL Team 6 usually briefed POTUS in full dress uniform with a beard while on active duty. The only law that applies to civilians is impersonation of an officer or wearing awards that were not actually earned. If you held that rank and you earned those awards, there is no one who can legally prevent you from exercising your right to wear the uniform as you wish.

Beards are to be wore if you have / had a profile while in service.
Most will say if you never had one while in uniform you shouldn’t wear one in uniform.
But any retired Vet will tell you, your face is not the same as it was when your where in probably. So if shaving is a issue, it’s up to you.
Worst that can happen is a “ On the spot Correction suggestion “, but your no longer in service.
I wore a beard for 15 years in the army, if I was at a event today after retirement and someone question me about me wearing my beard do you think He believe me anyway after I told him.
More then likely not, cause only a few soldiers had them and many wished they could of. So he probably still have something to say that wouldn’t matter a damn bit to me because God and I know the true, and he was just out of line for approaching me in the first place with something so trivial.
If your no longer in service look your best in uniform.

As a old vet, wear your uniform now out of service your still just as noticeable as you were in service and you should look your best and behavior manners should apply also.
Your beard, you should consider the fact of did you or did you not at anytime have a shaving profile. If not, be aware your not subject to any Regs, but you could still be on the spot corrected for what it be worth. (Zero)
I wore a beard for 15 years, still get asked why you wearing a beard in uniform. Very few believe me when I say I always had a beard while I was in the military. I kept one of my profiles, had Staples shrink and lamented it for me wallet size, Just so I can make people who ask me look stupid. ( I’m just that kinda guy)
But truly, what can be said that’s going to matter. Anyone ask you bout your beard,
“ Just state your no longer in the military and your Not required to show a shaving profile. Unless you can show me different”.

Those are great answers above. I haven’t wore a beard, moustache or any facial hair after I got married. Neatly 4 years after I got out. Just after my EAOS, I let it all hangout to try to be a rockstar, but eventually went back to school and became respectable. High and tights were easier to maintain and shaving just gave better complexion. It’s been over 20 years now, so if I could still fit in my uniform that would be a miracle.

The USN says "no". My daughter joined the Army. She was picked to carry the guidon for her Company at the graduation ceremony from Boot Camp, Ft Jackson. It had been years since I took off my navy dress blues but I wanted to wear my uniform to her graduation. I wrote to the Dept of the Navy and asked if it were permissible for me to wear my uniform to the ceremony. I was told in no uncertain terms "NO"! They said only active serving members of the Armed Forces may wear the uniform. No exceptions.
So I never got the chance to return my daughter's first salute.
That hurt. Back then I could actually fit into my old uniform and kept a military haircut etc. because I always had my entire life. I did not challenge the response because, well, 3rd generation officer and all that. If that was the law, or is now, it should not be. I EARNED that uniform.

My landlord is 94 years old, he was a navigator on B-24's. I have been asked by his wife, when the times comes would I speak at his funeral about his military career. To me this is a very humbling honor to speak of someone who got the Air medal for leading the bomb group that hammer on the Nazi's on Christmas Day 1944, During the Battle of the Bulge. I will not hesitate to pull out my razor and remove my facial hair, so I can don my Blues for one of the members of the Greatest Generation. So that is my 2 cents.

The American Legion does a very good job at keeping abreast of these things, so I defer to them. But last regulations I've read say... a vey may wear the uniform that was current during his termination from service. It should be warn as the uniform would have been worn while he/she served. It in no way states that a vet needs to conform to the AR600-1 Or other uniform code as far as personal grooming.
It becomes easier on the eyes as the military changes uniform and you join the ranks of those who have gone before more clearly(distinguishing between remembrance and impersonation)
You may wear your uniform in whole or in part (ACU top only i.e.) but complete uniform is preferred.
You are probably not old enough to remember our WWI vets in full uniform at parades, but I do. It is a treat for all to see a vet in their uniform (especially retired uniform). Thanks for having the pride to wear yours ... and be proud of your beard as well.

You're not gonna find a reg that covers this because there are no regs governing civilians. The only thing that dictates facial hair & uniforms is Common Sense and Good Taste ( CR 1-18).

The uniform is to be worn according to regulation period. I have seen vets wear the uniform and they looked like shit bags. I asked them about it and was told they are retired they don't have to conform. I informed them they do and if for no other reason they should not disrespect the uniform and look like a shit bag. But some people are just dumb as rocks and should be sent to underwater BB stacking school.

While I am no longer conversant with the current regs as applied to retired or inactive personnel, I will have to answer in what I believe to be true Marine Corps fashion. Were you allowed to wear a facial hair when you were in service? Many sailors (E-4 and above) were allowed beards while I was in the Corps. We, of course< had much to say about this. Something to do with orifices with hair around them, as I recall. That having been said, it is my belief that NO uniform should be worn with any facial hair (other than the regulation mustache), unless you are active duty spec-ops.

Rules and Regulations rule our military life, the way of life WE CHOSE. Therefore, I wont feel any hesitation if when I retire, I want to wear my uniform and have to shave and get an appropriate haircut. Remember, when you HONOR someone, YOU GO ALL THE WAY.... ARMY STRONG.

Just weighing in facial hair could be worn if you have a shaving profile but at that I believe you couldn't have it razor shape lineup on it because of the issues with your face and razor....

When stationed in the Pentagon in the 1990s, many retired Navy who worked in the building wore their uniforms with beards to events such as the Navy birthday ball, with SECNAV attending. We served in the Zumwalt era, when beards were authorized in uniform.

The Navy says (in part) that you must adhere to existing grooming standards if a veteran or retiree wears their uniform - but they don't say how they would enforce that. My guess is that unless wearing the uniform is used for illegal purposes, they can't enforce that rule.

I believe you made the right call by shaving. If you're going to wear the uniform, wear it proudly (I'm sure you did) and correctly. The beard does grown back.

I can't. I was 118 when I left the service and I am over 180 now. Beard or no beard, there is no way those uniforms are going to fit since I have filled out about 27 years since. Black suit, dark tie is the way to go. The only piece of the uniform I continue to wear today are the shoes.

More to the point - just don’t look like a S-bag. I think if you have a well groomed beard you look more professional then many of the paunchy ex-military types still trying to be tacti-cool. I’d rather see a fella with some handsome face Kevlar then someone clean shaven but wearing an ill fitting uniform and/or out of shape. Also you’re a civilian. You can do whatever the hell you want.

Retirees/Veterans who wish to wear the service uniform must meet all of the dress and appearance standards for there service (i.e. AFI 36-2903 AR670-1) to include facial hair and fitness standards.

I went to a Veterans Day event. I wore my blues with a shave and a haircut. That’s just me. I let my hair and beard go but if it’s some kind of Vet event, I go full tilt.

While on deployment facial hair was over looked to a degree, but once we returned back home, it’s back to rules and regulations.
As a retired or honorable discharge veteran, you are allowed to were the uniform, but again it’s back to rules and regulations.
Shaving profile rules apply if you wear facial hair.

The only reference I found was AR 670-1, para 3-16b (refers to beards as a religious accommodation). Apparently, the requirement for veterans and retirees to adhere to active duty grooming standards has been removed.

You have done your research in whether or not you can wear your uniform while you have a beard. Your gut is saying that you cannot, but you cannot find anything saying you can....go with your gut.

AR 670-1 sets the standards for wearing the uniform.

Will you be arrested for wearing the uniform with a beard...no.
Would you you be approached, questioned, and/or harrassed by other currently serving persons and/or veterans....you bet, it's a free country.
Up to you how you want others to see you in uniform.

Legally No to wear your service uniform you must adhear to the service e grooming standards.
An Army veterin was awarded the MOH by the President of the US at the White House. He had grown a beard and did wear his service Dress and the well trimmed beard. No one said anything at the time.

AFAIK, only troops that wear beards in uniform are SOF, CID/MPI and CIC in covert assignments, shaving profiles and some off beat religions such as ones that wear turbans.

Can they? Sure. I doubt anyone is going to tackle them to the ground and forcibly shave them. Are they supposed to? No.
When you wear the uniform, you're supposed to wear it in the exact same manner in which you would if you were still in service. That includes grooming standards.
It's HIGHLY disrespectful to the uniform to see obese, bearded vets running around like they're at a cosplay convention. But some people, despite their service, just never learned anything about dignity or respect.

23–3. Retired personnel
a. Personnel who will be advanced to a higher grade upon retirement have the option of wearing the insignia of that grade thereafter.
b. Retired personnel on active duty will wear their uniform and insignia in the same manner as prescribed for personnel in the RA of corresponding grade and branch.
c. Retired personnel not on active duty may wear either the uniform reflecting their grade and branch on the date of their retirement, or the uniform prescribed for personnel in the RA of corresponding grade and branch, when appropriate, but may not mix the two uniforms. Personnel will wear the grade as shown on the retired grade of rank line on their retirement order.
d. Retired personnel not on active duty are not authorized to wear the Army uniform when they are instructors or responsible for military discipline at an educational institution, unless the educational institution is conducting courses of instruction approved by the Armed Forces.
e. In addition to the occasions for wear listed above, retired personnel are authorized to wear the uniform only on the following occasions:
(1) While attending military funerals, memorial services, weddings, inaugurals, and other occasions of ceremony.
(2) Attending parades on national or state holidays, or other patriotic parades or ceremonies in which any Regular or Reserve U.S. military unit is taking part. Uniforms for these occasions are restricted to service and dress uniforms; the combat uniform and physical fitness uniforms will not be worn. Wearing the Army uniform at any other time, or for any other purpose than stated above, is prohibited.
f. Retirees are authorized to wear the physical fitness uniform under the following provisions:
(1) With civilian attire off the installation.
(2) When wearing the physical fitness uniform as a complete uniform, retirees will—
(a) Wear only authorized accessories corresponding to those worn by personnel of the RA.
(b) Wear the uniform in accordance with the guidance provided to RA Soldiers (see DA Pam 670–1). g. Retirees are authorized to wear the Retired Service Identification Badge (see DA Pam 670–1).
h. Retirees are authorized to wear the Retired SSI (see DA Pam 670–1). 23–4.

Former members of the Army
a. Unless qualified under another provision of this regulation, or under the provisions of 10 USC 772, former members of the Army may only wear the uniform if they served honorably during a declared or undeclared war, and if their most recent service was terminated under honorable conditions. Personnel who qualify under these conditions will wear the Army uniform in the highest grade they held during such war service, in accordance with 10 USC 772.
b. When authorized, the uniform may be worn only for the following ceremonial occasions and when traveling to and from the event and must follow guidance included in paragraph 3–7c.

I don't grow beards because I look something like Santa Claus lol! So, it's a neatly trimmed stache and sideburns for me. Besides, I look good clean shaven anyways. I haven't worn a uniform since I retired and is a mute point for me.

I realize I am responding late.
My first thought is that since many service members can wear beards in uniform special operations forces members.
Military Retirees are subject to regulation and as such their are specific rights and responsibilities for retirees who wear military uniforms.
Military veterans have more leeway in practice as opposed to policy . It is unlikely that a military veteran wearing long hair, a beard, mustache, or dying their hair would be prosecuted; there is a higher chance of prosecution if the military veteran is:
(a) At any meeting or demonstration which is anti-government in nature.
(b) During political activities, private employment or commercial interests, when an inference of official sponsorship for the activity could be drawn.
(C) When appearing in civil or criminal court

Military Retiree and Veteran Differences
(1) The rules state that retirees can wear their uniforms. To be considered a retired veteran, one must have served 20 years or more. However, there are medically retired service members who were injured in the line of duty who also rate the uniform as a retired military member once a civilian.
Veterans are members who served but did not accumulate 20 years of service, however, they may also wear the uniform but only in special occasions that are typically centered around military service and family events (military wedding / funeral, etc).

By way of an update, as of 27 May 2022, retired Navy members are allowed to wear a beard with the uniform. I looked into this because I've been asked to participate in a former CO's retirement.

5. GROOMING STANDARDS. Retired personnel must comply with the grooming standards in these regulations, with the exception of facial hair. Retired personnel are authorized facial hair when wearing Navy uniforms during functions and events. Facial hair must be properly groomed and no longer than 2 inches in length extending from the face outward. Uniforms and equipment may either be those prescribed here or those authorized at the time of their retirement.
