You have the right to seek 2nd opinions. Granted, the off post treatment will be out of pocket, more than likely Response by MSG Private RallyPoint Member made Feb 16 at 2022 10:30 AM 2022-02-16T10:30:15-05:00 2022-02-16T10:30:15-05:00 SFC Private RallyPoint Member 7530088

They can't deny you going to see an out of network provider - they just don't have to put in a referral. So if you go without a referral, you will be charged as Point of Service by TRICARE and you have to pay for it. If you want a second opinion and they won't put in a referral, just go and pay for it. If you can't afford it, then don't go. The other thing to keep in mind is that the military SHOULD take that second opinion into consideration... but they don't have to. At the end of the day, whatever your military providers say is what the military considers official. However, Tricare is an HMO and your second opinion will be wherever you are referred to, not where you want to go.

You can seek treatment off post by a professional of your choice if you're willing to pay for it. However, it's a long way between seeing a civilian provider and getting the outcome you may desire. Chances are you're probably hoping for some certain outcome, like a diagnosis that leads to a specific treatment or discharge. You primary care provider still has to verify and OK any treatments, and your EBH will need to validate any diagnosis' from a civilian provider.
