Survey needs more options. I'd say yes to both.

Is a common standardized core curriculum developed by educators and optional for states to adopt a good idea? Probably so.

Should states be able to opt out, should parents be able to educate their children as they see fit? Absolutely.

The common core test is just a gauge to see how effective teachers perform. Therefore teachers teach the test. The test itself doesn't influence the students grade or assist in getting into a college. It is a waste of time and energy for the whole education system.

I always say of Common Core, good idea bad execution. Having a common standard for all schools to go off of, if they so choose, is a good idea but it is poorly done and overly complicated. Also, states should be able to opt out of it is they do not wish to participate.

Ideally though I say do away with most of the Dept of Ed and allow local school boards and states to make their own curriculum. There should be some oversight to ensure that the curriculum meets some types of standards but each school, school district, and state have different student demographics and thinking that a one-size fits all model is going to cover everyone is asinine.

Finally, why do we need all of the standardized testing? If you want to go to college there are already entrance exams such as the SAT and ACT and many jobs now require some type of skills test.

I'll leave this as well as evidence as to why there is an impetus behind Common Core. When state school boards do this type of thing people demand action.

It is within the established duties of our government which is by the people and for the people to provide an educational environment for all and it is up to the individuals and their families to strive for education (which this country is failing at).

Keeping in mind the comments on the first quote, it should also be a demand of the people for the opportunities to choose the type and manner of their child's education. Using the example of the students in Seattle that refused to show up for their standardized tests, it has shown that the students are allowing themselves the right and desire to take control of their own educations. Sadly, it appears the State may have other ideas for that:

Opt out. The Federal Government has no constitutionally enumerated role in education. So the states own it, constitutionally.

Allow the states to meet their own educational needs, and allow citizens the ability to judge amongst competing models, and move to their state of choice if they want. Initially, some states will get it better than Common Core, others will do worse. The losers will learn from and emulate the policies of the winners.

If we only hired teachers from dedicated Teachers Universities (Finland model), killed teacher's unions and their protection of horrible teachers and felons, and allowed student tiering based on scholastic aptitude, our national education ranking would shoot up from #14 to #5.

I am currently in college as an accounting major and some of the math 6th graders get in this common core is out control difficult. I took it to school to show one of my professors and he said it makes no sense.

This is a really volitile subject. You may "break" Rally Point, 1SG Scott MacGregor! Common Core is a horrible idea. I don't even really want to get into it, because it will be hard to step back down off of my soap box if I do. My wife and I homeschool our children, and Common Core is a big (although not the biggest) reason why.

Common core means more work and resources, but can start to level more kids to a higher basic level. The bigger issue, in my opinion, is communities that do not care about education and changing behaviors.
