No. Could it happen within the next half century? Possibly. The short and sweet version of why is because there currently isn't any military on the planet that has the ability to project military force onto the continental United States. It's not enough to have a large fighting force, but the ability to project it and supply it for the duration of it's mission and there isn't a nation on the planet aside from us that has the capability. All this doesn't even consider the lunacy of facing a guaranteed American insurgency, or the impracticality of placating a nation as big as ours.

In short, we can be attacked, but short of WMDs entering the equation it will be a very long time before there are any nations with the capability to hold any stretch of the continental U.S. for any protracted period of time. Those could happen. But an invasion by any foreign power cannot.

Many people profoundly misunderstand the difference between American military power and our next closest peers. Understand this: there is no alliance of foreign powers (even China+Russia) that could get a large enough military force across the oceans past even half of our Navy to land and oppose even a third of our Army (notice I left out three of our branches and about 55% of the ones I mentioned-and also all the private armament of the US citizenry). There has never been a more imbalanced geopolitical power structure EVER. Nor is it likely to happen again. This is a unique confluence of geography, money and culture.

We face many challenges, but invasion by hostile forces short of extraterrestrials or hyper-intelligent AI is not among them. The idea may make for entertaining fiction, and my suspicion is it makes it easier to swallow a just reason to shoot your fellow humans in the face (other than the tried and true Aliens! Terrorists!
