I am a conservative. I supported the Tea Party's ideals but was not a member. The Republican party can go to hell for all I care. They chose to go against the wishes of a majority of their constituents and they can suffer the consequences just like the Whigs did.

The GOP is split ideologically, and this will hurt their election chances but it is unavoidable.
- If one believes in the sanctity of life one cannot in good conscience support someone that supports abortion on demand.
- If one believes in America's leadership role and responsibilities in the world one cannot support an isolationist.
- If one believes in the Constitutional division of powers and limited government one cannot support a cult of personality unchecked by the Constitution like Obama and Trump both lead.

There are many other areas of serious differences in guiding principles that are larger than Party, and which would have to be abandoned if one were to simply fall in line for the sake of the Party.

Not to mention having to vote for a man with the temperament of a petulant 14-year-old to be in charge of our nuclear weapons.

One is left with the choice of supporting either a disaster or a catastrophe in the general election, and many principled conservatives may well stay home - the results will be ugly no matter which way it turns out. The D or the R will make scant difference in the final results for future of the country.

Having said that, our 2-party system is a broke-dick dinosaur that is probably the single biggest reason we will eventually fall to internal BS (just like Rome did), if we don't smarten up and change it.

The GOP is already operating in the red with its membership over the poor opposition stance it has taken over the last few years. Getting rid of Cantor and Boehner were bow shots and the warnings were ignored. It has become a rubber stamp for the administration and the showy votes against O'care aren't fooling anyone.
The leadership has become contemptuous toward its members on nearly every topic that is important to them. Twice they asked for the power to effect change and twice they did not use it correctly when it came to its power of the purse.
Trump may not be the ideal candidate but he is the person the people want. The leadership has made no case to convince the members to vote otherwise and the blatant shunning by those who have received so much from the party especially the Doles, John McCain and especially the Bushes. (Really folks. 330 million citizens and two families want to supply five presidents? Maybe six with Chelsea up next?)
All elections are important but this one has one major factor behind it. The next president will pick as many as four Supreme Court justices. The court has become very partisan and Harvard University is over-represented as well as Catholic and Jewish philosophy rooted in the Northeastern US.
The Whigs were replaced by the Republicans in 1854. The Republicans can be replaced as well.
This is not the year to do it because of the court vacancies. Despite the unfaithfulness of the party to its principles we have more governors and local leaders than ever before in our history. The entire state of West Virginia has shifted to the Republicans and inroads have been made in other states such as Wisconsin. We should concentrate on winning this presidential election and start work cleaning up the mess next year. Vote out the Elitists and change the character of the party to one that works for the people.
Trump is probably the most unlikable candidate ever but he is better than Clinton and especially the Democrat-Socialist. (That term was coined by Lenin) Let's not make the same mistake we made in 2012 when 4 million Conservatives stayed home and voted for Obama. Really folks, could Romney have been worse than him?

Trump is only a symptom of the malaise in the Republican Party just as Hillary is a symptom of the malaise in the Democratic Party. The only difference is that the GOP pretends to have principles. The Democrats gave them up a few decades ago when they created the "Rainbow Coalition" (come on in, anyone can join, we don't care what you believe)

Of course. The Trump voters and the Sanders voters that are now voting on principles will stay home for the large part. Not that it matters, all that counts is the 270 from the final votes from those that do not even have to vote IAW the wishes of those that sent them to represent them known as the Electoral College. The system will win again.

That party has been in a circlejerk for the last five years. Fractions within the party have really manifested themselves to where no one likes or trusts anyone. A decade ago, Boehner would never have called a candidate in his party "Lucifer". That should tell you the sheer dysfunction in the GOP. If that doesn't, look at the lows the party has taken against it's own during this cycle. Campaigning has always been a shady thing, but families were off limits. Not this year. It almost seems that GOP leadership threw shit (candidates) at the wall hoping one would stick. Well the shit stuck, and it wasn't one of the candidates they wanted. When HRC is in the WH next year, there really needs to be a change in the mentality, the fractions of the GOP, and a change in the leadership. The GOP will NOT survive as long as they think catering to white voters will keep them on top. Say what you will on the Dems (I'll agree with most of it), they are a inclusive party, and while the number of voters out this year shows folks are reluctant in the choices available, they know they won't be turned away. Hispanics are the fastest growing population, and their votes will be crucial. Ol Ted and Lil Rubio killed that with their desire to alienate the Hispanic vote through hard line immigration reform even though the party itself wants immigration reform and a path to citizenship. The GOP hurt itself with the Bengazi investigation, the promises made when they took over congress in 14, with nothing done, the fact that Ryan went on national TV and told his followers they don't choose who runs, they do. He isn't helping when he also tells media outlets he's not ready to support Trump. Watching them in interviews is like watching the Keystone Cops, except you're not laughing because it's funny, you're laughing because it's so pathetic and you cannot turn away.

I believe that the damage is already done. As a highly polarizing candidate, Trump doesn't bring an advantageous situation to the rest of the ballot. The opposition will be highly motivated to vote against him. The effect that the GOP is concerned about is that some of the "Never Trump" crowd will stay home. This cycle, the GOP is at a significant disadvantage relative to their current position (number of seats). Consequently, before Trump, the concern for the GOP was how to limit loss of seats in the Senate, House, governors, and state legislatures. In spite of his appeal, Trump has the highest negative polling yet for a presumptive nominee.

So, the problem is how do they get conservatives, libertarians, and Never Trump folks to come out and vote. This is the problem that Reince Prebus and company are wrestling with. Bad electoral map, bad demographics, and a polarizing candidate that many in the party find distasteful and the opposition is highly motivated to defeat.

The media has been bashing Trump to try to eliminate him from contention. But he just keeps getting stronger results. Why? Because people of all backgrounds are listening to what he has to say and they find it the more promising of the candidates. You should go to his website and read the tax changes he proposes...good stuff.

As one example, consider the media report that Trump accused Cruz's father of helping assassinate JFK. There has been an online uproar about that. But do you know where it originated? The National Enquirer! It may be a great source of news for MIB, but stinks for political reporting.

All of you should remember this: It is too close to election time to elect a libertarian. The results will be like Perot (I voted for him as a write in) who pushed the first clintdawg into the WH. Whether you like Trump or not, whether your principles want to keep you from voting, a non vote is the same as a vote for the Hillary.

If the GOP nominates Trump, you have to vote for him or accept a clintdawg again in the WH. Personally, having The Hillary in the WH is the most terrifying thing I can think of.

THEN, start building a true third party to trounce the status quo in the next election. It's the only way to go right now.
