I use the little amount of professionalism, tact, respect, and knowledge (in that order) to help and mentor others when I see necessary. No stripes necessary. After retiring from the military I went to work for the DOD. Some of the civilian leaders I met or worked with were good people but didn’t have the structural type of leadership we were taught throughout our careers. A good leader with a military background uses his experience to plan and have a contingency backup ready. That being said, my experience from the military makes me over qualified for some civilian leadership opportunities.
