Nicknamed "Skinny," Harry joined the squadron in November 1943 as a young replacement and participated in their second combat tour, which included the rough missions over Rabaul. He claimed his one and only victory--a Zero--on the last day of the 6-week tour.<br /><br />Harry was not only the last survivor of the 49 pilots and two ground officers who formed the original Black Sheep, he was the last member of VMF/VMA-214 to shoot down an enemy aircraft in any conflict.<br /><br />Those days of combat and camaraderie were among the highlights of Harry's long life, and he was justifiably proud of his membership in one of the world's most famous fighter squadrons.
