Historically it has been shown that civilizations go through three phases. An emergence, a golden age, and a decline. Sadly the way events are going, the United States is likely in the decline of our civilization. This doesn't mean we don't have great people. It means that our society is crumbling under its own weight. Combine that crumbing with a government that people see as more and more of a hindrance to our nation's success than a guide to success, and you have the powder keg waiting for someone to strike a match. Once that match is struck, change will occur. It always does. Violently if necessary. If you want to see what that collapse looks like, all you need to do is look at the USSR. It collapsed under its own weight, and broke apart. Now you have Putin trying to rebuild Mother Russia. This is going to get interesting. It is going to turn violent. It raises two questions only one of which the article pursued. When will this occur (though the argument should be made that it started years ago), and what will be the outcome. Personally I think that political correctness is the fuse that will lead to the ultimate explosion, and our modern over sensitive society is the match. When plain language and civilized discourse is replaced with entitlement and repression, the fuse was lit. Now it is just a matter of how long before it explodes into rioting, armed conflict among citizens, and chaos. Then it is a matter of what will rise from the ashes. Will we become a stronger nation for this, or will we become the next roman empire, faded to history to be studied by future generations of students. I lived and served during those turbulent times. In fact "Kent State" happened the year I graduated from high school and that event drove a wedge between my father and I that was only removed after I had served a couple of years.

Then and now, at the heart of any civil unrest or outright rebellion is weak (and often times unethical) national leadership with both those of us on the "left" or "right" feeling disenchanted and disenfranchised by our elected officials in Washington DC. When you add a president who would rather be a "divider in chief" than being a uniter the whole mix will be explosive and we will see a breakdown of our civic and governmental institutions.

History seems to show that we have cycles of unrest starting from our own Revolutionary War and our break from "mother" England. Every 20 to 40 years we as a nation seem to have to go through a period there has to be a rebalancing of political parties, national social change and economic crisis. I think we are entering such a period if only because our federal government has become too big and uncontrollable.

Particularly in my darker moods, I think this is what Obama wants things to get out of hand so he can declare martial law and suspend the election process. Those who hold a conspiracy perspective or theory point to some of his actions, un and extra constitutional executive orders, ever increasing list of scandals and public statements as building up to that end state. Meanwhile, the GOP congress seems to be enabling Obama by giving everything he wants instead of drafting articles of impeachment.

Recent attacks on the 2nd Amendment and the growing campaign in the press and administration policy proposals are one more attempt to suppress our rights and national spirit. To many the push for gun control is really a push to control the American public. We seem to forget that this is a government of "We the People"....or as Abe Lincoln said, ours is "a government for the people, by the people and of the people...." The trouble is we have Senators and Congressmen who are "career politicians" and out of touch with their constituents.

So do I think we are headed for a period of civil unrest. The issues that divide the country are significant, and run very deep, so deep in fact that compromise is extraordinarily difficult, perhaps impossible without feeling as if we are compromising some fundamental element of self.

Examples: gay marriage, abortion rights and ACA. On these issues, people on opposite sides more strongly identify with the source of these values, than they do with their American identities. As such, there is no room for compromise. The opposing viewpoints on each of these issues, just as examples, have wildly divergent worldviews, expectations and concepts of government, that cannot be reconciled to each other in any real way.

I am deeply concerned with the outcome of this election cycle. If Former Secretary of State Clinton wins, there will be a large segment of the population, who have felt increasingly marginalized and disenfranchised during the Obama Administration, whose anxieties will only INCREASE, perhaps dangerously so, in the event of another Democratic Administration. My concern stems from the fact that some of those folks feeling that way will have spent all or parts of the last eight years fighting counter-insurgencies, and may reach a point where they feel that the Government of the US is no longer ABLE to represent them, their best interests or their most deeply-held values.

That, my friends, would be a problem.
