Do you think the Confederate flag belongs in a museum or a flag pole?

It should be there to because it is part of our history. May not be a part that we are proud of but none the less it's part of our history!

I think it belongs in a museum. It offends some (many?), and it is - at least in part - a symbol used by racists to further their despicable cause. My only concern, and this appears on other posts here on RallyPoint, is what's next? The hysteria that arises could flare up over just about anything. I've heard talk of taking down statues honoring Civil War Generals of the South. To me that's going way too far. The Civil War is still a part of our history. Let's not revise it out of existence.

I believe it should be in a museum as part of our American History. We don't fly the other earlier variations of the American Flag that were developed over history. They are in museums. Treat it as part of American History and let's move on.

It should be flown on and over memorials honoring the soldiers that served and died under it. It should be flown in the yards of those that want to keep it heritage alive.

It is the flag of a foreign nation.

Same as the Puerto Rican flag, or the Cape Verdean flag, or the Brazilian flag.

But it doesn't belong flying over a capital.

It should go in a museum. Understanding of the history of symbols is paramount to our country's growth. However if an individual's belief is that they have the freedom to fly this or other flags than that is their individual right.

I am not so sure I really care one way or the other... probably more museum than with American flag.
My biggest complaint is if it comes down for PC reasons...or, if once down, no one changes any attitudes and behaviors towards tolerance and acceptance of anyone or their ideas.
If we bring it down, and nothing changes, then just put the damn thing back up.

An individual should be able to fly the flag wherever he/she wants.
A governmental body should only fly it at locations designed to be historical monuments/memorials. It should not be flown as an official flag.
If the Confederate flag is banned from being displayed because it is "offensive" to some, then so should the Gay Pride flag, the Black Panther flag, as well as any such items displayed by the Democrat and Republican parties.

The flags of the Confederate States of America belong in a museum. In fact, prior to the Civil Rights movement in the 1950's, that's pretty much where it was, until it was revived by the KKK and anti-segregation folk as a common banner to rally behind. It was a banner flown with pride after lynching blacks or destroying their homes and businesses. I'll concede that it is a critical part of history, just as the Nazi flag is. It's a symbol that men fought and died under, but which many others were oppressed and murdered under.

I think it belongs in a museum, as well as being flown on any private property of those who choose to do so. I wish they wouldn't, but I respect their right to that form of free speech. I don't think it should be flown at any government building, even if that building is a museum (place it inside, as a part of a display).

Symbols have meaning. Displaying the Confederate Battle Flag has two potential meanings. One is that the person displaying the flag supports the notion that people of color are inferior (this is the meaning that was defined by those who fought and died under it). The second is that the person is ignorant of the real meaning and simply likes its colorful design and symmetry. Thus for those who display it I have to ask, are you a bigot or ignorant?

History - a series of static events, unchangeable, but under constant review and interpretation. In the 19th century the flag represented, to some, a grouping on States declaring their independence from a Union that sought to restrict their rights. To others in the 19th century it represented a grouping on States in rebellion against the greater Union. Which is right? That's where the constant review and interpretation comes in, but lets have some rational here, its the 21st century for cripes sake! Why are we still getting worked up by a hundred year old flag. We need to be concern with the yahoos that are grouping under it, cause at the end of the day they'll stand under a flag Disney princesses if they thought it would further their cause.

This flag represents a traitorous rebellion against the United States of America. I'm not going to get into the rest of the social banter on this. I don't think it matters as much as the fact that everyone who fought under it was an enemy of the United States of America. Put it next to the flags of other defeated nations.
