Does a person have any claim to serving or being a Vet if injured in a pre basic training course and not making basic training?

What is a Veteran? Title 38 of the Code of Federal Regulations defines a veteran as “a person who served in the active military, naval, or air service and who was discharged or released under conditions other than dishonorable.” This definition explains that any individual that completed a service for any branch of armed forces classifies as a veteran as long as they were not dishonorably discharged. However, with regard to applicable benefits, other considerations are important and will be covered in later sections.

No you are not a vet. You will not be given any vet status. You will not be given a vet ID at any VA clinic. You will not be put in any medical tier at any VA clinic.

If they never even made it to basic, then no. There are certain exceptions if someone is hurt in training, but since they didn't even make it to BCT, no.

Private RallyPoint Member one way of maybe getting Vet status is Delayed enlistment...I had 10 months delayed enlistment...to get the job I wanted and skip text school...due to a 2 yr. degree. When I got out of basic, I already had 11 months time and grade.

My ex brother in law went to MEPS. Joined Army Reserves. Went to basic - didn't even make it out of reception. He was there for 2 months as they outprocessed him I think for failure to adapt and I think he hurt himself somehow in reception.

He doesn't qualify as a veteran. If he ever tried to (he never has) say he is I would smack him in the face.

Absolutely not. I am sorry you were injured and didn't attend, but you never served or even came close. For me personally, even those who attended BCT but didn't make it all the way through are not Veterans either. That's a matter of opinion on my behalf, but you do not qualify by any standard.

Even in my time, a person was considered a veteran only if they served in a war zone. Obviously we live in more nuanced times but someone who didn't even make it to basic? Nope!

Ethically you either actually served or you only tooled around in training phases preparing you to serve.

I choose not to answer the latter for anyone merely seeking benefits without ever doing anything.

Technically no you are not a vet. A veteran is a person who has serviced at least one day of active duty. Meaning at least one day of boot camp not pre basic training course. Sorry.

It's been so awhile but I remember something to the effect of; if you do not make past 90 or perhaps
180 days the military does not consider you as ever serving??? Could be wrong. Policies change rapidly now days

I used to work in a VA nursing home. We had several patients who had 100% disability (somehow) for not being able to complete basic training. Back during the draft, they let many messed up guys thru the draft board & into basic training. I think at that point the military turned them into a charity case. Two of them I knew were childlike. One was 70 & ended up in the VA nursing home when his mom died. He had nobody to clothe him, feed him, etc. I don't blame the men, I blame the morons at their draft boards who cleared them for basic training. In the VA nursing home they were looked down upon by the other, real vets. Oddly enough, we had some guys who had such low IQs they were considered mentally retarded. Forest Gump types. They still served honorably in combat yet.
