Being in the military is irrelevant. Whatever the state you're residing in's gun laws are, that's what you're legally obligated to follow. I went to the county office and filled out the paperwork. They did a background check. etc. Do you live on base?? If so you may need to check with JAG. I have known a few that did this. They also carried a copy of the State Statute in case they were questioned about it. I would recommend not trying it. Cops don't even know about and they will charge you and let the courts deal with it. Meanwhile you will have to worry about when you have a arrest on your record. I would just get a permit. I have a Louisiana lifetime permit. It is really the best way to go.

2010 Georgia Code
TITLE 16 - CRIMES AND OFFENSES
CHAPTER 11 - OFFENSES AGAINST PUBLIC ORDER AND SAFETY
ARTICLE 4 - DANGEROUS INSTRUMENTALITIES AND PRACTICES
PART 3 - CARRYING AND POSSESSION OF FIREARMS
ยง 16-11-130 - Exemptions from Code Sections 16-11-126 through 16-11-127.2

O.C.G.A. 16-11-130 (2010)
16-11-130.
