All costing. Assuming if a person does not pass the test s/he has to pay to retake it. At any rate the only designations I have any remote knowledge of are such as Certified Safety Professional; Certified Industrial Hygienist; and a few others along the safety/security line. They all cost to join the association, pass their test, and meet their professional membership criteria. Some companies have never heard of any of associations and/or certifications, and some that have require a certification as part of their job criteria. The certs are also used among professional for sizing up your peers in the industry.("Here's my card"). There is a small amount of snobbery involved unfortunately if a person doesn't have such-and-such cert. If you have high confidence and/or knowledge that such a cert will be of a definite career help then you might go for it. If it's something 'nice to have' there are other certs which cost less in many fields. Best of luck..(never certified, but well trained).
