I'm seeing a greater occurrence of leaving an empty 5.56 or 7.62 case but prefer to see the coins instead. Occasionally I'll see a command coin but they tend to get picked up quickly (stolen).

On my Patriot Guard missions, I carry a handful of pennies for those graves I pass with military markers. In my watch pocket, I carry wheat-backs for those that are KIA. We recently took part in a burial for remains of a POW/KIA from Korea where I left a wheat-back and a PGR challenge coin. It means a lot to the families when they see those coins or anything else there.
