Does the SQI "8" awarded to Drill Sergeants after completing the course, allow them to be awarded the Basic Army Instructor Badge? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/does-the-sqi-8-awarded-to-drill-sergeants-after-completing-the-course-allow-them-to-be-awarded-the-basic-army-instructor-badge

… given they've meet all other requirements

I’m attempting to gain some understanding of the DS being awarded the “8” SQI after completing the course IAW AR 614-200/8-16. Since completing my DS time, I’ve transitioned to the schoolhouse as an 91F instructor since April 2021, I was informed by multiple individuals I did not need to attend the two week Common Faculty Development- Instructor Course (CFD-IC) as my ERB already reflects the “8” thus meaning I’ve completed a Instructor Certification Program/Course. As you may know a requirement to receive the BAIB (Basic Army Instructor Badge) is to have completed a TR 350-70 instructor certification requirement by attending CFD-IC before successfully teaching at least 80 hours as the primary instructor, which I have done.

My my current concern is that my completed 80 hours will not be counted towards my BAIB as I may not have technically completed the proper instructor certification. Any assistance or guidance in this matter would greatly be appreciated? You are slotted as a drill sergeant. There is no FDRP for the Drill sergeant program. TRADOC is aware that this is a problem, but the requirements to badge a soldier are not currently built into the BCT/AIT structure.

Additionally, the “8” you get is a remnant of the old drill sergeant school that has not been corrected by the folks who cut orders. Your “8” isn’t an actual awarded SQI. In order to receive an “8” you have to graduate from the two week CFDP-IC (instructor course). The drill sergeant POI used to encompass the old ABIC (obsoleted instructor course) and the “X” and “8” were both awarded upon completion. This is no longer the case.

During the DSA accreditation I was asked by the evaluators what it would take to make it happen and essentially… unless the FDRP (ArmyU) made huge changes or exceptions to the FDRP, it’s not something that will change soon.

You can, however, go to the DSA and be an instructor. You have to complete CFDP-IC as a part of the accreditation and then you are executing POI as an instructor. Your “8” isn’t valid. And from an FDRP manager perspective, none of the POI you taught prior to going to the course should count.

However, I’m not your FDRP manager, so… best of luck. All previous instructor certification courses (ABIC, FIFC, SGITC, IFSC, etc.) completed
prior to 2 May 2018, will remain valid toward FDRP for five years from the completion date, as
required in TR 350-70. When I got to my junior year in college, ROTC told me that. MOS was 05B4H. The PMS said come back next semester, this semester MOI. So I had to only take a semester and a half of ROTC.
