We all hate having to clean up someone else's mess. It may be the lessor mess down the road. Who knows? The USA cannot go much anything alone anymore. We've shot our wad the past 50 years being the policeman of the Earth, racking up toxic levels of debt.

So like others, we need to be prepared to follow through and need other nations chipping in to do it as well. Also, I'm waiting for a Presidential candidate to say our military will be a "Fee for Service" organization. Other countries chip in resources to protect sea lanes etc. or pay us to do it. Same thing should apply for things we support. If we don't see much service from the UN, then we shouldn't be paying for it. Whether it had a chance in hell to accomplish it's objectives. Personally I don't care for the deal. Was it our best option? Was our only other option war? I really don't know the answers to those questions. But I do know the big reason Iran was at the table was because they needed the sanctions lifted. I'm not really even sure Iran was that close to a nuclear weapon. Iran has the largest and most diverse ballistic missile arsenal in the Middle East. (Israel has more capable ballistic missiles, but fewer in number and type.) Most were acquired from foreign sources, notably North Korea. The Islamic Republic is the only country to develop a 2,000-km missile without first having a nuclear weapons capability.
Iran is still dependent on foreign suppliers for key ingredients, components and equipment, but it should eventually be able to develop long-range missiles over time, including an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile or ICBM. The military utility of Iran’s current ballistic missiles is limited because of poor accuracy, so missiles are not likely to be decisive if armed with conventional, chemical or biological warheads. But Tehran could use its missiles as a political or psychological weapon to terrorize an adversary’s cities and pressure its government. Iran should not be able to strike Western Europe before 2014 or the United States before 2020—at the earliest. Iran’s space program, which includes the successful launch of a small, crude satellite into low earth orbit using the Safir carrier rocket, proves the country’s growing ambitions and technical prowess. It is the most effective means available today to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.

I spent most of the latter half of my 30-year Army career focused on nuclear weapons-related issues. Reviewing the list of flag officer signatories, I see names of flag officers who I have both disagreed with and agreed with in the past. I also recognize names of some great Americans who I have reserved the highest respect.

Do they understand the agreement better because they are Generals and Admirals? That is not the correct question. Instead, we should review their expertise, experience, and overall qualifications. Some of those retired flag officers have been directly involved with command and control of United States nuclear forces and capabilities, as well as involved with international diplomacy, agreements, and arms control verification and intelligence activities. Most have expertise in national security strategy development and plans.

For those of us who claim this deal is an Obama administration issue: not so. Most of the broad issues in this agreement were outlined during the Bush administration. In a letter delivered to Iran in July of 2008, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, and the European Union, outlined to Iran what they could expect to receive in return for giving up its nuclear weapons program and closely cooperating with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to fully comply with the Nuclear NonProliferation Treaty (NPT).

For those of us who claim this is appeasement: not so. This deal is fully compliant with past UN Security Resolutions and international agreements; and specifically, the Nuclear NonProliferation Treaty. An important aspect of the NPT: while foregoing the development of nuclear weapons, research for the peaceful uses of nuclear energy is permitted, as well as a civilian nuclear power industry. Attempt a diplomatic solution and when it fails, and it will fail because Iran will build nuclear weapons again, then we go and dominate them to put it kindly. Sheer numbers are not important; however, there is much to be said for Congress to rethink blinding following Secretary Kerry's and President Obama's lead to get an agreement with Iran.
Holding Iran to continued economic sanctions and enforcing those restrictions on European and American companies to keep them from skirting the restrictions could go a long way to slowing down their nuclear ambitions.
