Drone crashes at White House. Can Secret Service defeat quadcopters?

This is a concern that I had in my last government related organization however, we were surprised by the lack of seeing the potential of the threat. I talked to a SME on the IRA who said that they had encountered this during the Troubles as they employed countermeasures against RC plane. Now we have advanced the technology with the addition of enhanced visuals, gps capability and programming flights without the need for a pilot being involved during operations. The IC has brought this issue up but if we see a major attack or assassination of a key leader occurring using these advanced aviation delivery systems, I would imagine that the IC would be thrown under the bus as not providing any warning.

There was no danger this time. But, like the spate of fence jumpers that troubled the White House last fall, the drone intrusion could indicate a security vulnerability.

Right now the claim is that this was a drone for recreational use but this should be a wake up call about this potential threat.

A drone is capable of autonomous flight, navigation, and landing, by definition. This was not a drone. Poor media reporting, and lack of knowledge in general perpetuate the nonfact that a quadcopter is a drone. It is a hobby aircraft, NOT a drone, and requires an operator at all times.

Hey think of it this way not just U.S. Government drones, see the ones that is sold over the counter at toy distribution outlets and just about anywhere else wanting to sell them that knows where to buy them wholesale and in bulk!!
