Russian forces have almost destroyed Ukraine, but Ukrainian forces still stand strong as obstacles in Putin's plans. The U.S. and its allies continues to support Ukraine indirectly, but what will eventually be the outcome? Negotiations have failed and both Putin and Zielinski have outlined their grounds for fruitful Armistice between Russia and Ukraine. What does Russia really want by controlling Ukraine?

Hard to say what the ultimate outcome might be. Putin however, can't afford to lose face so I fear he will push the envelop more and more. Then again, there have been stories about some Russian oligarchs plotting his overthrow. That, in conjunction with some pretty big anti-war demonstrations INSIDE Russia's various cities will result in two issues.
One, a severe crackdown on dissidents, labeled as traitors, etc. There's been some coverage of Putin cracking down in that regard.
Two, though less likely, Russian citizens may rise up against Putin; but, I have no idea how strong he really is, or how much real support he has from his underlings, including the military.
It seems like he has devolved into some level of meglomania ... but I'm not a psych expert by any stretch. There's always the issue of, "The devil you know," versus a replacement.

Carl Von Clauswetz opined war consist of 3 important components:
- A strong overall leader.
- Passionate people.
- A military with acumen.

Putin reminds me of Genghis Khan. He attacked Russian principalities. If the Russians surrendered, he did not harm the people. If they resisted, all the Russians were killed in the principality.

Russia absolutely can conquer Ukraine. There is no question about that. The questions are whether they are willing to pay the cost to take the country and then whether they are willing to keep paying to hold it.

My personal guess is that Putin has painted himself into a corner where he needs to "win" (that win might be taking Ukraine or it might be a negotiated settlement that he can spin as a "victory"). If the Russians do choose to take all of Ukraine, I suspect they will find it just as ungovernable as Afghanistan was and perhaps even more costly.

First of all, I can not believe the Russians are that inept or incompetent or incapable.

Something doesn't add up and if they really are as bad as they appear then it will end in victory for Ukraine. Let's hope so.

But the wider problem is having a meglomaniac on the world stage flexing his muscles. Putin was bad from the start and nothing will change him except death or removal from power. That will be the trickiest part in all of this.

The world order doesn't have to be new just better.

Unfortunately the Ukraine can not hold off Russia forever. When Putin gets tired of the bloodshed, etc he will basically go on on a kill everything mission. When he does there will not be anything left standing and he will kill anything breathing. It will be costly but I don’t think he cares.

I think Ukraine, for all its effort and the sheer guts of its people, will fall eventually. After the fall, what's going to be left? For Putin, Eastern Ukraine is where the resources are. But I seriously doubt he will be satisfied with anything less than the whole of the Country. The Ukrainians are a very strong and proud people. The may fall, but they'll make the Russians pay for every inch in blood. What Russia wants is complete control, and a base to launch the restoration of the old Russian Empire. He sees the rest of Europe as weak and unwilling to intervene. He won't stop at Ukraine. The second one Russian soldier puts a toe on Polish soil, NATO Article 5 kicks in, then it's welcome to WWIII. You'd think the Europeans would have learned the lesson about stopping naked aggression right from the start.

The Ukrainians are far tougher than expected.
They might defeat the Russians if NATO allies continue to feed them supplies.
Eventually Putin will realize he has entered Russia in another Viet Nam experience and will have to leave Ukraine.

It will partially fall but will never be broken and will be the thorn of Russia forever. Ultimately Putin will get control of the part that he wants top annex, sadly. In the long run Ukraine will survive to defend and fight another day. Russia will never be accepted there. This is another example of how people like Trump and his minions must be stopped or else we will be an Autocracy!

Russia wants a buffer state. They want the Donbas region because they rely on industrial capacity of the region. The war might be a distraction from his domestic problems. Right now the Russians are too inept to fight well, but they are massing in the Donbas region. Germany used 1.2 million soldiers at the Battle of Stalingrad and still failed. If the Russians can conquer the Donbas region, who knows if they want more.

Before Putin launched his special military operation, I don't think the average Russian citizen thought about Ukraine. Putin from the time he was a KGB agent stationed in East Germany, and the wall came down, has dreamed of another Soviet Empire. That single thought has become his obsession. He wants to deny Ukraine any coastline on the Black Sea and create a landlocked country. His nightmare is the day when the US and other naval powers pay courtesy calls to a Ukrainian port, if we haven't already. History tells us that when Nazi Germany invaded the Ukraine, the Ukrainian people welcomed the German soldiers as liberators from the Russian yoke. Of course, this attitude quickly changed. Stalin in his purge of the Kulak class of farmers, during the '30's' in the Ukraine, simply starved to death, a whole class of people numbering in the millions. What Putin wants is to secure his goals through a cease fire, armistice or similar device that allows Russian troops to remain on the territory they hold. That would be a de facto win for Russia. Without a complete withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukraine everything else is moot.

I predict Ukraine will take back another large sloth of territory and completely demoralize the Russian army and cutoff Crimea from Russian control around the anniversary of the Invasion. But it's looking like Russia may go on an offensive also. So, it's going to get bloody.

Putin's attempt to "Make the Soviet Union Exist Again -er- Make Russia Great Again" hit the wrong country. This is a prime example of wars not being won as long as one side still has the means to resist-even if those means are coming from allies. This is going to go on till either Putin or Zelensky dies/is removed from power. The Ukrainians are proving they'll fight for their country, but will not fight stupidly. the Russians are showing the warning of promoting "yes men". the US should take this last lesson and run with it.
