I was there in 92 as part of Task Force Gulf Bravo, dealing with first wave Haitian migration. We were there to build up the camp and make upgrades to Camp Buckley. We did have buildings that we could not go into or touch, because of asbestos and lead paint. So yes some of the buildings had asbestos in them

There were Banana Rats, Feral Cats, Crabs crawling all over the place and land mines that killed a couple of friends in mind field maintenence. The mines shifted all the time and minefield maintenence could not rely on the placement maps. They shifted in the soft sand all the time.

I was stationed on Gitmo on the Green side in 2000. I have not experienced anything like cancer, yet.

Good news! I didn't expect a lot of people to have come down with cancer; but the base has been there for a long time, and the services didn't always used to take the best measures regarding chemical disposal, groundwater contamination, and so on... there have been cases even in recent conflicts. I was considering a contractor's job there, and would have been taking my wife along, so I wondered. But it's moot now, as I've got another offer. Still, I'd sort of liked to have gone, at least for a year or two. My best buddy went to GTMO after we got back from Vietnam, and he had some stories!
