Has the Media Become More Entertainment/Opinion Than News?

It seems lately the media is more speculation than fact and is counterproductive to fragile social situations. Opinion and unchecked facts appear to ignite unrest or give the problems an audience over those trying to resolve the issue. I miss the news being the news rather than flavored with skew.

I would give as far as it is negative in content just to get people’s attention. We are subjected to the news that is against peace makers. Yet, hardly any mention of Officer Brian Moore paying the ultimate sacrifice his life for the job.

I would like to think that Anchorman 2 had a pretty good run down on it. They found out they got better ratings with exciting fluff pieces than facts and so they run with it. It is not news anymore, it is purely "educational" entertainment.

The best alternative I can find is NPR. I'll admit, it is entertaining, and I cannot completely rule out biases on the part of its affiliates and networks, or its reporters. But it seems to be relevant information, local and international, and I'm certainly more informed for it; unlike watching FOX news.

How to put this.

Salaries have to be paid. To pay those, you have to have advertising. To have advertising, you need "ratings" or viewership. People have to want to watch your show.

In other words, your show must be entertaining.

Definitely too much opinion. Too many people are tried and convicted n in the court of public opinion before any real evidence is presented because of how the media spins a story. IMHO if there are no facts to support a statement then reporters and anchors should not interject, imply or provide supposition on anything.

Look at what happened with the alleged "shooting" in Baltimore the other day, the story wasn't even confirmed before Fox put it out and this could have caused a new string of violence.

This is exactly why I find Twitter useful. Easier to follow credible journalists.

My ex-stepfather has been brainwashed by the media so severely, he associates this county with Nazi Germany and hates Law Enforcement.

He's never had a problem with police, but the media has him convinced that they're all evil. Really sad.

this really is a no brainer especially with that LTC getting the ax for calling the president a pussy. While he might have thought a second before he spoke, he responded to the question asked him in his own truthful way. In his opinion, he was telling the truth...He felt when he saw the response that Obama gave, the questioner asked him 'what went through your mind?' and the LTC said, 'obama you are a pussy!' so, while it's not very newsworthy, it did make it entertaining...people are still talking about it.
