The warhead failed to explode (thankfully) but can through the air vent landing on the floor about three feet from the desk the phone was on. As I rushed up the stairs to find out what happened I met him on the stairs. He stopped long enough to tell us not to go up stairs because there was a mortar rolling around waiting to explode. So there I was on the roof a 3 story apartment building on Italian Army Compound called Camp Viannini in down Herat, Afghanistan. When a rocket was fired at the "4 Star" Hotel (in name only). It was indirect but somewhat close. I was sitting next to our up armored hi-Lux when the round hit so I just stayed put since it was the safest place near me. I did say a quick expletive and my father in-law who is a vet himself asked what was up. I just told him that a mortar round landed and I was gunna sit tight for a minute to make sure no more were on the way.
