The famous cases of breaking Enigma and the Japanese Naval codes in WWII.<br />I don't remember when hacking became a word and a profession; but, long before that point government agents and contractors have long been employed to make clear what had been encrypted. Most encryption technology is open to be verified and implemented. I don't think there is a win or lose associated with it.
