A hair tie? Like a pony tail? How can that be IAW AR 670-1? How could you tie your hair up when it's not long enough to touch your ears, neck, or brow?

From my look at the regulation, AR 670-1 only authorizes the use of hair devices under the section covering women's hair. It makes no mention of it under men's hair. So, in the absence of it being explicitly authorized for men, it would be unauthorized. Everything is covered in Chapter 3-2.

Just a talking point, my hair is very long, by this I mean if I pull down the longest part it touches my chin. Now when I do my hair “comb over” it is very much in regs according to the newest revision of ar 670-1 now also my point being of allowing the use of a hair tie. In ar 670-1 it states that it can not affect wear of head gear, maintain a clean professional appearance as long as the hair on top does not exceed to surpass eye brows or ears that includes being combed over. Also when I’m in civilians I wear my hair tied up because it’s easier to manage and not waste hair product. “I understand that most of you will say it’s easier to not have it that long” yes understandable but all of us are different. When my hair is tied up I’m still able to maintain the above regulation quoted from the male hair grooming standards of ar 670-1.

What the Hell!! AR-670-1 absolutely does not allow males hair to be long enough for anything to keep it up. Only females are authorized limited means of keeping their hair up.

First...no. You can't in uniform. If you want to bun your hair in civilian clothes...sure. I'm one of those classic types that believes you shouldn't have a man-bun unless you're strapping a samurai sword and live in the 1300's, but whatever. This hair style will be dead in less than 5 years anyhow. My biggest concern is that something that requires hair product is not conducive to combat. If you have to cart around hair gel to the field, in a real combat situation...you're going to run out or be forced to carry a duffle bag full of the crap.

First of all I think this "hair bun" nonsense on men is just that, nonsense!! You wear the uniform of the United States Army and in all truthfulness should act accordingly!! It's silly stuff like this that makes me wish for the old days when men looked and acted like men and the same for women!! Back when I was in the Army, women were not allowed to wear hair ties while in uniform. You had to use hair pins or cut your hair within the regulation for women. I do not understand why people have to buck the system!! What happened to having pride in how you look in uniform and just follow the regulations!!!

If it doesn't specifically mention it in the regulation, operate under the assumption that it's a no.

Why join the military at all if you are not going to conform to the regulations?
Men have certain grooming standards, just like women have grooming standards too. Cut your hair and once you are out of the military for good and working in a job that allows you to have your hair any style, length, color or cut you want. Until then, why put yourself at the center of negative attention from your NCOs and higher ups?

AR670-1has change thru the years(decades) there was a time when the length was regulated and has changed since. BLUF was short hair for personal hygiene. Military has gotten soft with so much!!

This is not what the Army is supposed to be. Also read an article about a soldier being authorized a beard because his religion called for it. I believe it was Norse Paganism (not that it matters). These things are not allowed for reasons. If you don't like it don't join the damn military. Doesn't make any sense how we went from "No! to damn bad" to "Ok we'll consider it" the last thing to go, I thought, would be our military discipline.

No problem, he should become a civilian then he can wear his hair anyway he wants - and his old uniform if he wants. I see lots of former military in uniform all the time. Maybe he can get work as an extra in a Hollywood production - many of the "military" they show are hilarious to look at....

I'm really a short hair guy and have been all my life(73 yrs)but in this day and time I think there should be only one haircut Reg.The ladies want equality and the guys should have it also. If long hair is allowed on females and can be concealed while in uniform there is no reason males cannot do the same.
