If actor Dom DeLuise actually served 42 years as a "Career Private" what would others think at his retirement ceremony?

Actor Dom DeLuise plays the great sidekick to Burt Reynolds in the 1981 movie Cannonball Run. In this picture he has at least 14 service stripes and is the rank of Private / E-2. Burt Reynolds told him he was a "Career Private" and is he up for a promotion anytime soon?

I had a squad leader back in 3rd ID in 2003 that told me the quickest way to make E3 in Korea was to show up as an E4. I think maybe Private DeLuise served 42 consecutive tours in Korea.

If we all "rise to the level of our incompetence" (as I once had someone tell me in reference to an NCO that he wasn't fond of), DeLuise's character might be a flat-out genius. That, or he ought to have some pretty good stories from why he wore a hole in the carpet in front of the 1SG/CO/BC's desk

You know, it's funny that you bring this topic up, because one of my favorite ways to pass time is to read the list of court martials. One of the most standard is the drug pops going from E-3 to E-1, but every once in awhile I see long time careerists who got busted down from E-7, E-8, E-9 all the way down to E-1. I've always been interested to see if they would actually modify their uniforms to reflect the E-1 status despite the large number of service stripes.

In regards to DeLuise's retirement ceremony, I'd honestly think that he'd probably be a badass with no care in the world. Because we know if he was a genuine screw-up, the military would have given him the heave-ho. But if I saw someone who has been in awhile with a fat stack of chest candy with almost no rank to show for it, I'd figure he did something bad enough to lose his rank, but not so bad to kick him out.
