I am a retired CW2 and live near a northern state military installation. I get saluted by the gate guards and called Chief when going on post. I half assume from the post policy toward my blue card and half assume from the feeling of saying 'Chief'.

If you're retired, whatever your rank is, you are that to active duty. And that's good enough for me.

Plan on moving to FL, top 5. What is interesting is that Montana made it high up, but today I was on Kipplinger's site, and they gave MT a low rating.
I do know that for now, FL does not tax your retirement, and it generally stays warm.....
What I cannot believe is that with it's ridiculous cost of living, CA made into the top half...

I would say Texas is right at the top! Texas has tons of bases....just about any where you go there is a base...here in SA there are about 9 bases in the area...go north and there is another base in Austin then Killeen...go south and there is a base in Corpus...east and west more bases.
Texas has great VA hospitals...
Texas has lots of jobs LOTS of CIVIL SERVICE jobs due to all of the bases in the area...Lots of jobs in the oil fields making awesome money.
Texas has mostly great weather
Texas has great VA benefits i.e., Hazelwood Act and other benefits...Big break in property taxes

Arizona ranks 18, so not too bad. It could be better but it's definitely NOT the worst!

I knew NC (#41) sucked (especially for taxes and VA Healthcare overall) before I decided to move back home. I am lucky in that I live near one of the best VA Facilities in Asheville, NC and work across the state line in SC.
