One possible cause is due to the new PC concept being over taught in colleges many of the people on the receiving end of racial accusations are bending over backwards in fear they are committing a social err and it will reflect bad on their personal and social endeavors. Knowing this some groups and people are pushing subjects further then they ever would have 20 years ago. We also see the concept of what I refer to as generation "entitlement" that has many of the younger people using this as tactic to get something for free. They want respect and to be seen by others as superior but without the effort to earn it. This can apply not only to racism but in other areas of life as well. I will close by stating racism is alive and needs to be address but to have a cloud of false accusations to get something for free only clouds where the real issue needs to addressed. If you don't like a policy and you can spin that it has a racist undertone that's going to be an easy way to get people to agree with you because I think most people agree that racism is bad. Is it a factor in all the situations its brought up in? I don't think so but it give the media or people with an agenda a good angle on something that might otherwise not be some big story. Long answer... see below.

In today's society it is easy to be hurt by words. Words are scary and they hurt just as much as sticks and stones do. Additionally, with the invention of smart phones and the accessibility of mass media nothing can he hidden anymore. We have become a society that if something is not to our liking then we can yell and scream to get the attention we think we deserve. And if we yell loud enough or long enough then someone is going to give into us. We are nothing but spoiled children lacking any discipline. Before these inventions it was much harder to bring attention to the masses as quickly as it is now. Now we are able to loudly voice our opinions to a much larger audience with little interference.

I am an immigrant, not a child of immigrants or a second or third generation American. I am an immigrant. My parents and I came to the US in 1982 when I was 6 and brought me along for the ride. I didn't become a U.S. citizen until 2006. I have worked hard to make it where I am and I never once cried racism or any disadvantage. I have an accent, I have trouble pronouncing and spelling English words, I have occasionally had difficulties with other American "norms". But, I overcame. Nothing was handed to me like so many others. I attribute this hard work to giving me the resources to work beyond my difficulties to achieve something for myself. I could have let the elementary school kids that made fun of me for wearing glasses or for my accent or for not being American get the better of me. A teacher told me and my parents that I was better suited to work in manual labor because of my lack of my academic skills. I worked to make something out of what I had. I love the military and one of the reason I love it so much is because I believe with every fiber of my being that it is the only organization that has come closest to MLK's "I Have A Dream." I have risen to where I am not because I am male or female; White, Black, Hispanic, Asian etc. I have risen to where I am not because I was born into the right family or went to the right school. I have risen to where I am not because of someone I or my family knows or because we contributed to the right political candidate. I have gotten here because I worked my butt off. Don't tell me "Can't" because I CAN and don't tell me "Don't" because I WILL. We are responsible for ourselves and our actions not someone else. Only I can limit myself.

It would have been too easy for me to give in and cry racism and blame others for my lot in life. The current movement of only certain lives mattering is something truly disturbing to me. It is in essence saying "I matter or you matter but, this other person does not matter." What is wrong with this picture? I think I matter. I think you matter. At the end of the day we are all human and we all bleed the same color - red. We need to take responsibility for our actions and quit blaming it on something other than the root problem - us. It is always easier to blame someone else other than ourselves. Until we, as a society, quit doing so it will just cause the division to grow ever wider. We need to toughen up and quit getting hurt over over what others say of us.

It can summed up by the following words available on a poster on Ranger Up (dot) com. In full disclosure I have edited it for content as I wouldn't want to hurt someone's feelings by having put a curse word on this site. Actually, I find it ironic as I just ranted on this in the first paragraph.

Most people never have to do anything truly hard their entire lives. Their idea of overcoming adversity is to pull an all-night study session, or to work a little overtime, or not be able to afford the leopard-skin pants they’ve always wanted and actually have to save for something. Rather than get the instant gratification for their every need not being attended to. Kids aren’t allowed to lose so there is a trophy for everyone. Hurtful words are now being equated to physical violence, which is comical. We go to war and only .45 percent of the population answers the call over eleven years. There is no rise in taxes to cover the two wars we were engaged in so the average citizen doesn’t suffer at all.

Increasingly, we’re told that we are the smartest, most handsome, most amazing people in the whole wide world. Even if we haven’t done a g**damn thing to earn that status.

In short, people have no idea what sacrifice looks like anymore. Then when their given the tiniest window into the military world and they see kids reaching physical exhaustion, getting yelled at, getting emotionally brought down, they just see cruelty. They don’t see the value, because they don’t know what we know.

That toughness is earned. It has to be earned. You can be naturally smart and naturally athletic. You can be born with every advantage. But when you’re getting shot at, none of that matters. All that matters is the work you’ve put in, the skill you’ve acquired, and your willingness to fight though it all and never quit, no matter what.

In that moment and that moment alone, can you realize the futility of the participation trophy. It’s first place or nothing.

Warriors are not born. They are made through hard work, suffering, and sacrifice. Although race is not an accurate reflection of humans, we continue to separate individuals by the color of their skin. It's when one race purposely does something to oppress another race based on their skin color. I grew up in the south and I can tell you times when blatant racism was thrown in my face. In high school in the mid 80's, I submitted an application to work as a bagger at a local independent grocery store. The white lady I gave it to threw the application into the trash right in my face. She didn't even wait until I left the store. I ended up getting a job as a school bus driver and I had 2 white supervisors and they were the absolute best. So you ask why people cry racism? Because it still exists. On the flip side of that you have to ask why are some people quick to use race to their benefit? Like calling the cops on a person of color because that person of color calls them out on something that has absolutely nothing to do with race. Reference the white woman in Central Park who called the police on a black man who was bird watching. When he told her she wasn't allowed to walk her dogs in that particular area she called the NYPD and said she was being harassed and threatened by a black man. There's video of it. Also, look at how some politicians restructure a voting district to make it more advantageous for them to win while harming those who live there. Stopping early voting. Not allowing certain venues to be voting centers. The list goes on. You see, it's easy to make some of the comments that have been made when you're brought up in a society where you're given the answers to the test because of your skin color. Make no mistake about it people, racism still exists. For instance, at 12 years old while walking down Old Galveston Road in Houston TX some hooligans in a pickup truck threw a pipe which hit me right above my right eye and then jumped out yelling "GET THE NIGGER!". Luckily I knew the area and was faster than them and even with blood streaming down my face, I was able to outrun and avoid them. And NO, that experience did not deter me from being who I am now in my 70 plus years on this Ball of Mud, and accomplishing what I needed to. So all that left of that event is the memory and a quarter inch scar over my right eye. As a matter of fact I don't think of it unless some commentary such as this shows up which tries to discredit the experiences of people who suffered from what some try to say doesn't exist.

The most egregious, heartbreaking and sad memory of mind is from 1969 after my first tour in Nam and was on Leave with one of the guys from my unit who lived in the same area of me. We were to meet up and he and his brother and a couple of friends for a few beers. The place they decided on was a "GO GO BAR". Everyone was white except me and that changed the entire dynamic of the evening. Even though I was decked out in my Sumner Khakis with all the salad on the chest, the bartender still stated; "HE CAN'T BE IN HERE." On the real that didn't even matter to me because I was born in Texas and even as a child noticed the hatred. Didn't understand it but it was hard to miss. My white brethren took more of an offense than I did and a fight broke out. Luckily one of the cops that showed up had served and was sympathetic which kept us from going to jail.

The above didn't change the trajectory of my life after experiencing this because I was and am a student of history, especially military history. I had the privilege to speak with some of the original members of the Montford Point Marines and listened to what they had to go through simply to be able to serve their country. I read on the WW II black veterans who came home from battle to be denied the same benefits as their white counterparts. While the GI Bill’s language did not specifically exclude African-American veterans from its benefits, it was structured in a way that ultimately shut doors for the 1.2 million Black veterans who had bravely served their country during World War II, in segregated ranks. When lawmakers began drafting the GI Bill in 1944, some Southern Democrats feared that returning Black veterans would use public sympathy for veterans to advocate against Jim Crow laws. To make sure the GI Bill largely benefited white people, the southern Democrats drew on tactics they had previously used to ensure that the New Deal helped as few Black people as possible. So wouldn't we consider that as being systematic of "racism"?

I see some saying "That was then. Why can't you get over it!? Makes me wonder what trauma they had in their lives that they got over so easily? In the years since, while always working in a professional field, I have a few times been stopped while driving and/or walking black. Back in the day spoken to disrespectfully and detained because "You fit the description!" But that didn't stop anything either because you learn to play the game and subsequently teach your sons and daughters how to play the game so that winning means that you get to make it home while many others did not.

As a student of history something that is happening today really brings it home. Children like Ruby Bridges had to carry the memory of being escorted into school while angry mobs called her names and threw stuff at her and she is still alive and prospered despite of how she was treated. But the fascinating aspect of this is that even though a young black girl had to endure this treatment, some are saying now that her story is not worth being told and they are trying to strip it and other atrocities from the annals of history because they say "It makes little white boys and girls feel bad about themselves" apparently paying no attention to how it made all those young black boys and girls feel. So that is not considered "racism"?

We won't even delve into the legal system where two individuals of similar backgrounds, even when one of the defendants are charged for the first time and the other has multiple cases and even convictions gets lesser time than the individual with no priors. It is all recorded And that is what is called "Systemic Racism". Of course, you yourself might not be racist or have preconceived racist notions, but to deny that it does exist is in and of itself perpetuating the plight on humankind.

That is my soapbox performance for now and I'm sure that some won't understand and won't even bother to try to understand and that is alright. Look at the world and its people. Look at what humans do to one another, some even in the name of God, so at this late date in the game, I have no expectations for people because that always leads to frustrations. And trying to deny history does not erase it. It is what it is. I totally agree that everything is not racist but it is undeniable that some things are. Everyone is not racist, but there are racists among us. To paraphrase the radio serial The Shadow; "WHO KNOWS WHAT EVIL LURKS IN THE HEARTS OF MEN?" They answered that "THE SHADOW KNOWS! When people were children, and they got in trouble, they didn’t have the social skills needed to overcome the trouble. So they created an excuse. If left untethered, or even encouraged that is what the child learns works and continues to use it till the day it doesn’t or they die. I know people in their late 60’s and 70’s who don’t or won’t accept personal responsibility for what they do or fail to do. It’s sad. Politicians are recognizing this and using it to their advantage. People often choose the easy way over the hard way, never realizing that the easy way gets you in more trouble than the hard way. Rather than discuss and come to a consensus between differing opinions on any given subject, there is a demand that only one opinion is the "right" one on any given subject. Rather than have any discussion, anything - especially when it comes to cultural differences - gets wrapped in the banner of racism. I've seen this on the community college campus where I teach. It is infuriating when even lousy behavior is excused under the guidelines of "You're only pointing this out because of your white privilege!" Yes, even white students have called me a racist or bigoted.

"Racist" is being used as a call-out for anything someone doesn't fully understand but has no desire to have an honest discussion about. It's simply a tool - a club used to silence discussion or opposition. A free society must have open and honest conversations without silencing or stigmatizing opposing viewpoints. Sadly, we are on the cusp of outlawing "politically charged" opposing viewpoints.

The words "racism" and "racist" have been stretched to the point where it is now racist for me to expect students to submit assignments ON TIME. I've been called a racist and bigot because I expect students to submit work using standard English grammar and spelling rules (no, I am not joking). I have also been called a racist and bigot and "BOOMER" for enforcing the college's academic integrity and honesty standards.

As American culture deteriorates even further, soon, everything with a standard will become even more racist and bigoted. The truth is, be it known now, that during SEAL T-6's height, that you just took off your blouse, went out back and duked it out no matter what the ranks were with no fear of repercussions or disciplinarian actions of any kind. There was just kind of a general rule not to let your alligator mouth overload your hummingbird a--! I know most of the military doesn't have as close a camaraderie as some other group members but this was an easy way to settle things which the liberal pukes in our society wouldn't stand for. Everyone should be able to be reasonable and respect one another but there will come times when someone might just need an attitude adjustment. Racism is just a fact of life and will never change no matter what authority requires others not to do it. People have to gain respect not have someone else telling others to respect them because that is the way they want it. People need to get over the whining and get people to respect them by their actions or they will never fit in and be accepted! As John Wayne so aptly said, "Life is hard, harder if you're stupid". Become a member, not an agitator if you wish to fit in. You might find life much better instead of having the poor me victim attitude.
