Is a large-scale military presence at the border a good idea?

First of all, I'm not saying it's bad or good. I like to play the devils advocate I can see this being a good idea as well as a potential disaster. I know that the military has had a presence at the wall in the past but. The thing that I see from this is Border Patrol has jurisdiction so basically a military presence is for show or Border Patrol has no jurisdiction in which case they might as well go home and let the military(Coast Guard....their not doing anything anyways lol) take the reigns. Something that I've noticed from this President is military is the answer for everything with him N.K. has nuke killem all, Illegals are crossing the border military enforcement I'm all for a good fight but lets exhaust every option first. He lied to the American people when he said Mexico would pay the wall anyone who believed is a moron. And now he is trying make good on that by having us pay for it. On the other hand illegal immigration is a problem which needs a solution perhaps a wall is the answer. I don't know I live in San Diego for 10 years when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton I loved going into Mexico(TJ) for cheap drinks and an occasional donkey show. This is before the Marine Corps shut it down. I'm sure we don't have the full story only the media's version ...what does everyone think

Nope, all for stronger border security but using the (national) military isn't the way to go about it. Hire more BP agents who get the training and tools needed to do the job. Not enough money? Well that's we elected such a supposed financial genius... he should be able to figure it out.

Well having a wall versus not having one...Canada our neighbors to the north have a comparable system of living, we really don't need a border with them, nor are they coming in by tens of thousands. Mexico by in large is not comparable to the US and therefore people come in droves from there and further south. The need for a wall is apparent. Now mind you I look at the East German Model and it was pretty effective at keeping people in Mines, barbed wire and machine guns can be a great deterrent. But is that what we need?

The Border Patrol is under manned, with each deputy having to watch/man as much as 50-75 miles apiece. We can rotate NG units up and down the border to help coverage- you did read where over 1000 illegals are caravanning up thru Mexico as we speak.

In addition to what we have had in the past? If you really knew how well the other agencies work you would also come to the conclusion that the military is the most competent agency and therefore the most visible. What are your suggestions for other agencies in regards to NK? Or Syria, or the border? Health andHuman Services, Dept of Education, Dept of Transportation. He already had State Dept working on these things-

To me, if we lose the border, we've lost the nation simple as that! There are nefarious socialist political conspiracies at work here on BOTH sides of the border and, whether the border is being breached with "Backpacks" in stead of BULLETS it's still an INVASION of our beloved nation. These invaders are NOT the immigrants who built this nation a hundred or more years ago, who brought skills and determination with tears in their eyes. The immigration laws that such States as Moonbeams California choose NOT TO OBEY were enacted to protect Americans from being burdened and invaded. Now, there are even traitors among us who help some of these invaders to VOTE!!! Yes. VOTE! An American sovereign and hallowed right. Hell, we need to ARM the border.

1. The USMC did for years
2. The Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona National Guard did this for years post 9/11 so there is a decent amount of experience
3. Tell me of any first world country that allows unrestricted border flow into the country and does nothing about it.
4. Illegal Immigration hurts working class people, many immigrants will work for below minimum wage. When this happens it suppress wages, hurts our overall economy, as these people don't have health care and we suffer for it. Look at how many hospitals lie dormant due to lack of funding in California alone.
5. The Illegals kids will end up with education paid for by us, the taxpayer, they will get low cost housing paid for/subsidized with taxpayer funds.
6. Let an illegal get in a car accident with you, let me know what your new rates are when that is over with.
7. a porous border leads to rampant smuggling, both going in and coming out. For Mexico to become stable they need to tackle a host of issues but taking down the drug/crime kingpins would be a good start.
8. Never served in the CG, but I have a hell of a lot of respect for them, they do more than most us will ever know. Keep in mind these are the guys who to look out for the illegals coming in from ships, deal with the pungo boats and other means of illegal importation. They work harder then Navy at controlling illegal immigration.

Anyone else ever watch "Border Wars"???they catch illegals crossing in all size groups, some with a jug of water, some with backpack bundles of weed....when they're caught, they're"processed" and released back across the border, just to come back tomorrow...Solution...first offense, shoot them in the foot, then send them back....second offense, ( you can tell it's their second time, by the limp) shoot them in the other foot, and send them back....Prognosis...if I've been shot in both feet, and treated by a Mexican doctor, I don't think I'm gonna try that again...

Think they are only talking about using them in support roles, as they have in the past (the NG has been on the border for a long time). I think the major difference talked about here is using them under federal control rather than state control. They are legally prohibited from doing much in the US without a Congressional proclamation. If you want them doing armed patrols and detaining people you would almost have to have them push into Mexico and create a buffer zone, and no one is talking about that.

Although there are sticky legal issues, if the military cannot be used to protect our own borders then what is the point? Should we rename it the American foreign Legion? Also it would seem that all these countries urging their citizens to come north should be willing to work with us on how to make their home countries better, rather than saying Yankee stay out of our business.

A large group of people trying to come into a country defying the laws, going against the president and it's military is in my opinion an evasion and warrants a military presence. I'm not sure of exactly the correct way to handle the situation is but I believe that something needs to be done.

Sending national guard troops makes sense to help an undermanned Border Agency, I heard 6-7 thousand men short. They're not there conducting combat operations there there to observe and patrol. They have the man power, and the equipment, but they dont have the power to detain or arrest. They could inbed an Agent into the patrols to fix that problem though and under his direction they could interdict border jumpers.

It's been done before when we've had large scale crossing of populations and such.
The question is, "What has changed that makes it needed now?"
Until that is answered you can't formulate any Course of Action(s).
There also was heavy ACR 47 years of Border Patrol in West Germany for a guide.

The market for smuggling will increase drastically. I feel as if it would slow illegal immigration down but will not stop it. I don’t see it ever being completely shut down. People will always find a way to beat the system. I am all for LEGAL immigration. There is nothing better than seizing better opportunities for yourself. All in all I do not see much change happening even with military presents.

Is the National Guards and Reservist going to rotate and if so what is the duration of time spent at the boarder? To get up to speed
, what kind of training/additional if any is involved? Most people think build a wall and the illegals will stop coming. no one is focusing on the Europeans and Asians who come thru with a visiting visa and stays. NO I and not Latino . However, people shouldn.t say one unless they are willing to say two. Not only that they are bad people in every culture. Yes get rid of the bad apples. Illegals work jobs that most Americans do not and/ or will not do . The following is not all but some: Fruits and vegetables planting, maintaining ,picking,cleaning and packaging. NO SALADS AND FRUIT CUPS FOR US. Mexico won't send any. Fish Houses,
warehouse workers for less than minimum wages. Maids, Janitors, cooks and laundry workers for big name hotels. Again, less than minimum wages. Maids, cooks, Grounds Keepers and nannies for the high middle class. SHOULD I SAY IT less than minimum wages.

I am surprised how this is not getting more heat.

We all swore an oath to defend the constitution which states

Section 4

The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government, and shall protect each of them against Invasion; and on Application of the Legislature, or of the Executive (when the Legislature cannot be convened) against domestic Violence.

We would all be a good sentry as seen here
