Is it permissible to wear the dress uniform if it's still set up to my previous rank? Normally, I would answer my own question with a resounding "no". However, I have an unexpected funeral to attend, and I feel wearing the dress uniform, even with the previous rank, would be more appropriate than wearing acu's.

SGT Private RallyPoint Member I realize this is not going to please many "experts".... If you're unable to get the rank issue fixed in time, go as the dress uniform is right now - with the understanding that: (a) the uniform is inspection ready now (minus proper rank) and (b) you're not going to end up in this forum as another wanna-be wearing a General's rank. ACU's at a funeral, IMHO, is out of the question. Unless your family is full of military types (and even then) I suspect the family of the deceased will appreciate you showing up in dress uniform greatly.

Also, be aware - somewhere along the line, you're gonna take flack....

I would say do everything you can to get it right. Personally that is not an event that I would go to with an incorrect uniform. I had a full dress uniform made, tailoring and rank/rockers/service stripes, in under 12 hours for my brothers funeral last year. It can be done very quickly at any uniform or tailoring shop. You will probably have to pay extra, but it would be worth it.

I say get it fixed if at all possible or borrow from a fellow SGT. But that could be problematic as well.

Are you on active duty? Then spend the coin and get it fixed, and after the funeral is over, beat your face for being lazy.

Are you in the Reserves/Guard? If so, are you an officer or NCO/enlisted?

If officer, then spend the coin and get it fixed, and after the funeral is over, beat your face for being lazy.

If enlisted, if you're an NCO, beat your face for being too lazy to push the paperwork through for getting the alterations made. If enlisted, your NCO needs to beat their face for being too lazy to supervise you.

Why demote yourself? Expect pictures. Get your rank sewn on or wear a nice suit.

No, wear it with your proper rank, or wear a nice suit. If you wear the wrong rank you have given yourself a demotion. Don't misrepresent yourself like that. If you have the time and resources, get it fixed, if not, wear the appropriate civilian attire.

When you got promoted, WHY would you NOT run with your dress uniform to the alterations shop with new rank in hand?

Getting both my SGT stripes and then my SSG rocker put on my uniform were proud days for me.

Show some pride in yourself and your uniform!
