Is simulation used outside the military?

Flight simulators; law enforcement simulators; sporting goods (archery, fishing, etc) simulators. There are also engineering analysis programs, motion picture ("Star Wars", "Avatar", etc.) production, medical diagnostics, economic modeling/game theory, etc. Lots of applications in civilian life.

Simulation is regularly used in advanced science, research and development and first time construction projects. The project I'm working on right now is on the 4th iteration of it's HVAC computer modeling. So yes it is used, primarily where it is a new item and there is significant risk in performance.

Excellent post. I miss the technological piece of service. I was assigned to SMDC ARSTRAT about 10rs yrs ago and got to see the latest (then) cutting edge stuff with SBIRS and a large swath of space based ISR.
