I have no tattoos and I think tattoos are stupid in my opinion. I dont understand the need to write all over your body. If you have tattoos good for you. Not sure what benefits you get from it.

I personally don't have a tattoo, but it does tell a story if observed correctly.

If a member of the special forces wore one then one would know they are or where in Special Forces. However there is another side to this, prisoners as well have tattoos and one can tell the difference, If the tattoo appears to be as it was written, crooked, smeared. One can tell this person has served in prison.

I however have heard that the needle used to draw the designs in the flesh while getting a professional tattoo are used by many people, to include this who have HIV.

interesting part of this is that no one is going to go to a tattoo parlor and say they HIV I was a tattoo of (anything). Disinfecting all needles are not always 100% true and some needles are not always maintained or properly cleaned causing the possibly of getting an infection that much more faster without anyone being aware. I guess that for those whom wish to get a tattoo while in the military as Major Nelson stated would be advisable, but also stay highly alert while your getting your tattoo by the designer.

Observed where he gets his needles and where he puts them, see if he cleans them properly.

The only thing I have to say other than what has already been posted is: if a service member was allowed to enter service with certain tattoos during the height of the war, should that be allowed to be the only disqualifying attribute to them no longer being allowed to serve. I think no! If someone's tats are good enough while the bullets are flying then why aren't they good enough now! A little ignorant for my tastes. If a decision maker in D.C. Has a problem with service members tattoo's that he had prior to entry into armed services but was still allowed to join, he should feel free to enlist him/her self and stand the watch. I have 2 tattoos myself. They are my 2 eldest sons names and birthdays. Obvious why I'm not showing pics!

That being said if they are going to change the rules now persons already serving should be grandfathered!

Using this posting as a landmark so I can load my tats later. I believe tattoos are the one thing of warrior culture that i always going to be in the military. Tattoos have been around longer than the American military system, and they are not going anywhere. I have three I will only be showing two off. All three have personal meanings but I'll share that the two I'm sharing, one is a momento of someone, the other represents my pride in where I'm from. It is a flag, not the US flag, anyone want to guess which one it is before I post it?

Here is a picture of my newest addition to my collection.  There are three figures in all wrapping around my leg and all will be done in a silhouette fashion like this one.  The background will be a smoking/cloudy style.<div><br></div><div>Out of the 15 tattoo I currently have, 10 are related directly to my service.  I think for those of us that choose to get tattoos, the art work gives us a chance to honor and remember our service. </div>

I love tattoos, I love self expression. At the end of the day its all
about sellf expression. The army wants specific rules and while i am
playing the US Army's play ground i have to play by their rules. Much like
alot of other lifestyle choices in this world (IE Motorcycle Clubs, Political Parties, LEOs etc.) . I may not like it but until i brush the sand off my knees and walk home i dont have a leg to stand on to fight it.

I have two at the moment and want more but cost is generally a limiting factor for me. I have to symmetrical and everything has to have a meaning and work with everything else. I have two Socks already drawn and am working with my artist to make it more interesting. What i have decided to do is Take the templates of the socks and trace
my hand in four places and have those tattooed to meet the regs at which
point i will wait until A. they change it (again) or B. I get out and
have it finished.

I am also working on my chest and shoulder peices which will all flow from one side to the other and once i get those ill tie in the half sleeves.

I know it sounds kinda of crazy to plan everything out but i hate the idea of being lop sided or asymmetrical.

I have never understood why the Army is now taking a no tattoo stance. I mean I can understand why some places need to be avoided, hence the Kentucky and Tennessee tattoo parlors are off-limits because of sanitation. It doesn't matter to me if someone is inked, as long as it's respectful, no racists crap or gang crap. As far as the SMA thinking it's unprofessional, obviously he's a political hack, that knows nothing of History, and soldiers past. The ancient Celts were a bad-assed bunch, and they had tribal tattoos, wore woad and went into battle nude, the Maori, in New Zealand, were another bunch of bad-asses, they wore tribal tattoo's to show their prowess in battle, the list goes on, and on.

One of the things I discovered on my last Westpac was that there was not enough beer for me to get a tattoo in any port! I went on Liberty with a RMC who got a tat in every port he ever hit and while I hung with him and contemplated which one I wanted and drank the free beer, I never actually got one. Although I give blood almost every 57 days +or- I still have an aversion to getting stuck with needles for any other reason.

30 years USN and no tatts - but I do like the artwork. Now if I could just find the right beer...

I so wish they would take AR 670-1 back to the way it was and allow tattoo's to stay. I wanted to be a warrant officer but am not allowed to be now due to the fact that I have tattoo's below my knee and elbow. I think that the reg is just wrong.

I don't have any ink of my own, and I couldn't really tell you why not, but I don't have problems with it. Ink or a lack there of doesn't make you a better or worse Soldier. Being a dirt-bag does. That being said, I would like to see less of it on the neck face and hands... other than that, I am good. Plus a lot of it is straight museum quality art in my opinion.

Sorry, the BEST tattoo I've ever seen, was of a wounded soldier being med-evaced out of a fight. The tattoo's message was simply:

"For those I LOVE, I will sacrifice"

I feel like an oddball for being a prior Marine Infantry Assaultman and never getting any Ink.

Part of it....is the only Tats I remember having much respect for in Boot Camp were what people already had, that they were a bit more personal. I avoided the whole thing about getting the "drunken usuals" out of Boot Camp.

That said, I've got plans, and just haven't gotten myself to the needles yet.

I think somewhere along the line during service, I thought...In the unlikely event I become a POW, I shall not divulge anything, and that includes no bodily markings. The importance of the "Meat Tag" helping friendlies match my missing limb to my body after I'm done with it...was less critical to me.

I find all these rules about them getting ridiculous. I figure an "in-shape" tattoo...is far more useful than some more senior staffer's "out of shape" gut is.

I don't have a lot of issue with keeping Tats off the hands (visable with a long-sleeve uniform on) nor do I personally care much for tats on the neck (because it kinda says "Jailbird") but overall I think Performance > Fashion Show.

That said ... what is visable in PT Gear, which is also not visable in any other uniforms...WHO CARES...you are a stinky sweaty mess and not impressing anyone anyway.

In order of how I got them. Back right shoulder, Right Arm, Left Arm, and Right Leg. Those are actually my daughters feet prints from their birth certificates. I loaded them into photo shop and designed it. All except the eagle are designed by me. I did change the head of the eagle and added the Army part.

It is an accurate flag. The 7 red stripes are the head of the head of the wolfhound. The 6 white will be my skin showing through.

This is my favorite tattoo. It obviously holds quite a bit of meaning and my artist Beau McCoy from Capital Ink in Old Sacramento CA did amazing work. Every time I look at the progression of this tattoo I am blown away by the quality of the work, where it started and where it ended up. Beau is the only person allowed to put ink in my skin from that tattoo on.

McCloud Family Crest (often spelled MacLeod) on my left shoulder. The family motto is "Hold Fast", which originates from the third clan chief Malcolm MacLeod (1296 - 1370) when he was charged by a bull. He is said to have killed it with only a dagger while the onlookers shouted "hold fast".

"Destruction of Government Property" was the line when I was in the Navy. I am not sure if that is said today. The unit I was in required us to have a set of unmarked uniforms, and I believe they would frown down on any distinguishing marks. As Such, I did not get my first tattoo until after I left.

I met an air force guy at a bar we had never met before but we could tell each other was military by the short haircut and clean shaven image.. he said he could tell I was army because of all my tattoos. ... wow okay.. my point is that military members already stand out in a crowd because of our grooming standards why distance is further from the population by limiting tattoos

The largest on my left shoulder is a representation of myself carrying the North Dakota Army National Guard patch close to my heart. The rest are relatively self explanatory but the last dragon on my left forearm I did myself. I have more but these are the most notable.
