A Maryland man was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting a fellow U.S. Marine while the woman slept.

Pedro Javier Orellana, 24, was serving in the U.S. Marine Corps and based at Camp Pendleton north of San Diego at the time of the attack.

It took jurors just one day of deliberation to convict Orellana.

He admitted to investigators he didn’t really know the woman and had only seen her in passing a few times.

However, on Nov. 2, 2014, Orellana took advantage of the active-duty Marine who was “too drunk to know what was going on” as he explained to Navy investigators.

He entered the Marine’s apartment without knocking, found her in a bedroom where she was sleeping and sexually assaulted her.

Orellana told NCIS investigators had received training through USMC regarding sexual assault prevention.

Orellana, who is no longer a U.S. Marine, will be sentenced in November on one count of sexual abuse of an incapacitated victim.

This is sad and hope he gets the Max. I don't understand it why do it you know it is wrong. The worst part is peopel will see this and go see look then military breeds this behavior. When really we are a small microcosm of what happens in the civilian population but they won't admit that.

I cannot add much to that statement other than I wish that female Marine the best in life and I hope she is able to move past this tragedy.

Awful, but not a huge news story realistically. Justice was served. Never should have happened but a whole lot of steps are already in place to try to prevent this. There are still failures at times.

The title Marine and this a**clown's name should not be used in the same sentence. He's not a Marine, and he disrespected A Marine by assaulting her. No room for "men" like this in ANY branch.

I'm reminded of an old television show, Branded and the opening segment whereas the soldier is kicked out of the fort. I don't recall much more of the show. I hope knowing this SOB is "branded" gives the WM some solace. It's about time we see these cases prosecuted. There are thousands of men and women who suffer in silence because military leadership failed to take appropriate action. I commend this leadership for stepping out of the mold and doing the right thing!

It's the 10% that gives us a bad reputation and he is part of that 10%. When I was active duty, we all were ( and still are) brothers and sisters. We might argue some among ourselves, even throw a few fists here and there, but we always had each others back. Of course the morals the world had back then was of a higher caliber than the morals of the world today. I hope he gets the max sentence also.
