I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and sleep with a CPAP machine. It didn't preclude me from world-wide service and I never got a chance to "exercise" that clause. I've also worked with several Department of the Air Force Civilians who were hired under the old veteran rehabilitation program. Hopefully, in your case your command did their diligence in informing you of the various options for retraining and rehabilitation.

I will say it's especially tragic when the member is both young and highly motivated. I remember a young Airman Basic fire fighter who was playing volleyball behind the fire station when a one in a million hit to his face severed an optic nerve. Instant irreparable loss of vision to one of his eyes, and instant ticket out of the Air Force. No one was at fault it was just a tragic accident.
