Military-related Displays, Collections, and Museums

There are a ton of great museums, collections, and displays related to the military, military history, etc. We've talked about similar subjects here, so the idea here is to discus & share some of these outstanding collections/displays/museums (both civilian and military) that (directly or indirectly) speak of our military history or tell a story applicable to the military experience; although some may not be military specific, but somehow relate to the military in some way (think the Holocaust Museum, Spy Museum, and others), some may be here in the States, while others may be overseas, and some may be smaller local collections (or displays that have military meaning). Still others may be private or at the HQ or unit level. Please feel free to share any photos, links, stories or anything else necessary to describe your tale; thank you for all that you do, and... see you all in the discussion threads!

PA ARNG at Fort Indiantown Gap, PA has an open-air display of military equipment and a museum of the 28thID and PAARNG. It's not extensive but gives an idea of what the PA Guard has done over it's history. Given that the 28th ID is the oldest division in the US Army, the history is extensive

The Army Heritage Center and Education Center in Carlisle, PA is also a very nice museum with a large open-air display

Some of my favorites are the Airborne and Special Operations Museum (Fayetteville, NC), the 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum (Ft. Bragg), and the U.S. Army Chemical School Museum (Ft. Leonard Wood). The ASOM has a lot of really well-done displays and great artifacts. The 82nd museum has a lot of great artifacts ranging from World War I to the current conflicts. The Chemical Museum has a lot of great history and tells the story of the Chemical Corps from the fledgling Chemical Warfare Service of World War I to the highly technical branch that it is today.

I love the army's personal recogniton portal on the army museum at Belvoir Va. I am a founding sponsor and love to volunteer and recognize soldiers. I wish other services had a recognition portal. If anyone knows of one please let me know. I am the historian at American legion post 33 and would love to hear about this stuff.

In addition to the National Museum of the Air Force, we have a (relatively) small, but quality museum in Ohio as well. I'm sure there are others out there as well... how about some props for these small museums!

My wife and I are huge Military History buffs, we have people all over the place and found some really cool Museums and collections.

One I recently went to was the Air Force Armament Museum in Fort Walton Beach, FL (right outside Eglin AFB)

Just recently I went up to El Monte with The West coast Battalion of USABOT and visited the American Military museum. We got to see quite a few static displays and some of them had been used in movies.They had a picnic area where we had lunch.

My all time favorite Military site has to be Valley Forge, outside Philadelphia. If you go, don't miss Washington's Chapel. Talk about hallowed ground! The Park Service maintains a good book store in the park. Lots of fascinating displays of milataria. Their display of period medical instruments is extensive.

When I was stationed at Ramstein AB in the '70s, I got to drive to Paris for the Paris Air Show. The roads from Germany to Paris all have war memorials from one war or another. Verdun was impressive with the Massive military cemetery that seemed to stretch forever. But Chateau Thierry was awesome. The memorial built there for American Doughboys in the 1920s will give you an idea of the casualties suffered there. If you end up in Germany, make the trip to Paris.

World war II Museum, Natick, MA is a private collection and all original items from WWII both hte European and Pacific Theater of Operations displays. Thye Nazi uniforms in Picture (1) the uniform on Adolph Hitler for instance came right out of Hitlers closet. Picture (3) shows actual German Enigma code machines. The Picture of General Patton that is His own helmet on the head of the wax figure of Patton. The picture of the prisoner was worn in a Nazi concentration camp. A section on London the air raid sirens are heard and the sound of exploding bombs. There is a web site that shows even more including the location and how it can be visited. This Museum is well worth the trip and I've been a few times. (click on the images to view all the pictures posted here)
