Nationwide witch hunt continues as petition seeks to remove Stone Mountain carving.

I thought I saw it all with the change to the "General Lee." Now it seems that confederate monuments throughout the South are under attack. The latest is a petition to remove the carving of the three Confederate generals from Stone Mountain. Will it ever end? Surely this single tragic event in Charleston hasn't fueled this witch hunt. I wonder what made it grow to this point, where images and monuments long left alone are suddenly under attack. I was born in Detroit but live in the South. You can't erase history. People of all colors and nationalities visit Stone Mountain by the millions. Why this and why now?

We can take the Confederate Flag out of all of our states' flags, from the General Lee, and Walmart. But, we cannot erase history. We don't necessarily have to like it (our history, that is). But, it's important to acknowledge it. Stone Mountain does this: It's a beautiful piece of masonry, artisanship, and ... yes ... heritage. Whether you're a Rebel or a Yankee, the men depicted were Americans. What's next? the Honorable Mr. Washington at Mt. Rushmore?!

Mantra of the left, "never let a good crisis go to waste". It is disgusting that people are trying to use a tragedy to advance pent up political issues/dislikes etc. but there it is. Some political operatives will take any event and try to advance their cause whatever it may be.

At West Point, I am told, there is a memorial to the leg that Benedict Arnold sacrificed to "the cause" before becoming a traitor to it. Virtually every military leader of the Confederacy fought honorably in service to the union prior to the rebellion. Can we not honor them similarly?

The flag is an entirely different matter. It was born of the rebellion and served one purpose only. That purpose carried no honor and should be relegated to museums just as we relegate Nazi symbols to the ash heap of defeat.

What has fueled this "Witch Hunt"? Unbridled and unchallenged PC media. they are preaching hatred and calling the USA a white supremest country and no one is telling them they are wrong. Other than maybe FOX but we all know they don't count. Yes they have actually said this on national news, and it's being repeated all over the internet and anyone who disagrees is a racist. I cannot remember the country this torn apart on a day to day basis since the week DR King was murdered. And even that was more a handful of hatred than a movement like I see today. I'm sorry, yes there is racism in the USA, as there is in all societies, but it is not as rampant as they (The left wing newscasters) are trying to make it.

This is sooo stupid it hurts! So they take down the flags. What is next erasing history. So street signs, school/Gov't building names, National Parks, monuments and wait they forgot one. The MASON DIXON LINE!!! I will grab an eraser and start who is with me? Get over it. Go to other countries where racism and freedoms are under attack everyday.. Go to Irag/Afghan were your religion is under attack and it does not matter if the religion is the same, but your from a different sec. Go to Germany were if you are not quiet on any religion or politics your are removed from the state. Go to Africa were you are killed on the wrong ideology. RACISM is real and has been since the time of GOD. Remember the Romans killed GOD! HELLO wake up! Learn from history and not destroy it.

Stone Mountain has pretty long ties with racism. The KKK was re founded at that site in 1915. MLK Jr even mentioned it in his "I have a dream" speech.

While i have a problem with the confed flag, I think renaming bases, taking down statues and monuments is ridiculous, some of them were amazing people on the wrong side of history.

I think that the term activist that these people use is giving these people a false sense of security or victory. The constant undermining of heritage, and history that some people do not agree with is just wrong. The confederate flag, and monuments that are numerous around the southern states should be left alone as it is a part of history. The thought that this particular monument or even the conferate flag is some kind of symbol for hate is just people that do not understand history at all, and are not so well informed. I am not a racist person because I study history and actually read books, or collect certain items of historical value, or visit sites that reflect historical signifigance. The fact is Slavery was put in place well before the Confederate Flag every came to be eveidently does not matter to these so called activists that seek to remove history. I have to say that when you remove history, and memories that it creates you are doomed to repeat mistakes of the past. I also have read a lot of these posts on here and I have to agree that this seems very extreme to me, much like when the taliban blew historical sites up in Afghanistan, this was nothing more than surpression of people, which as I see is a form of slavery in itself. Supression by political duress, and activists usually turns into ok lets take something else out of context and see how far we can go. Lets see what else we can take from the people. Lets start with flags, then move on firearms, and monuments, and reduce the American Ideal to nothing. If you speak out against this kind of action I see alot of people being called names, why cant people just live life, be happy and once in awhile if you get offended by something well say thats offensive, but ok take a higher position in life and learn not to be so selfish as to take away from the people for others actions. Mass Punishment does not work, it actually creates resentment and turmoil that persists in the mind. If you attack peoples heritage and symbols they do not take it lightly and they do not forget. Im from Indiana, so these symbols mean nothing to me personally, but the idea that they may be taken from history, erased, or destroyed is actually a horrible thought, and actually very insulting and disturbing to think that activists have so much power.

I am not surprised, considering the mayor of Memphis wants General Forrest and his wife exhumed from the city park and reburied elsewhere, and the removal of the monument to him.

I honestly feel that the current POTUS has set the standard for today's society and not all change is good change. I am a proud Texan and proud of the southern heritage. Only, people forget the honor of it all and are worried about their own agendas. I'm also Hispanic and I don't think of "racism" every time I see a confederate flag, I think of southern pride. People just need to stop feeling sorry for themselves. I get it, your sensitive, leave me out of your problems.

Incredible. I remember visiting Stone Mountain as a kid and one thing you looked forward to in the summer was the laser show. The Georgia government will fight tooth and nail to keep this site intact. Regardless of their affiliation during the Civil War, these generals were still Americans. Gen. Robert E. Lee chose to decline the command of the Union army because he did not want to fight against his home state of Virginia.

You know, that being said, why don't we move to tear down Arlington House or the home (Stewart House?) Gen. Lee resided in temporarily after the war ended. People need to stop being so damn sensitive.

I lived in Redan, GA and I could see Stone Mountain from my neighborhood if I got past the trees. If the carving in this National park goes then you might as well tear down the Jefferson Memorial, the Washington Monument and every other monument that have to do with our history as a country.

If the carving goes then you can just as well burn the southern states down all together, because at one time they were all racist. It would also set a very dangerous precedent from which this country, and its rich history, may be destroyed to the point that it can not recover.
