SSG Roderick Smith 999583 <div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>I'm at my 2 year mark in Germany, and I recently called my branch manager. I was super excited to be given the choices of Knox and Wainwright (can you feel the sarcasm?). I'm not really interested in that part of Alaska, so does anyone have any info on Knox and the surrounding areas? I spent a month there in '07 for WLC, so I don't know much of anything. Any information would be greatly appreciated! I loved it. Just depends on what your into. Elizabethtown is nice, Radcliff isn't to bad and Louisville is just a stone throw away. I haven't been there for a couple years but like I said when I was there I loved it. 4th street in Louisville brings in bands and musical artists in the summer, there's plenty of clubs and bars on 4th street and bardstown road if you like to go out with friends, the Kentucky derby is a blast, it's all what you make it. I was a part of Emergency services operations and worked for garrison command. As for me and my family we had a blast there! We went to the KY Derby, the bourbon trail etc... It's no longer a tradoc installation and more of a ghost town until the cadets come in during the summer. Its pretty much the home of the Army since HRC is there and USAREC. The surrounding areas are awesome. Elizabethtown is growing, Rineyville is great place to live in as well as vine grove. Also if you choose to stay on post you'll get a place almost immediately. Housing there is only at 30% and they have opened it up to civilians since there isn't very many Soldiers there anymore. It's a great place and you'll love it. Those two areas are the closest cities to the base, as Radcliff (outside the gate) doesn't offer much at all. As for activity, the community is rather quiet with occasional activities. You are centrally located in the Mid-Eastern portion of the country and can access other major cities via car. Nashville, TN is 2.5 hours south, Indianapolis is 2.5 hours north, Cincinnati is 2 hours northeast, St Louis 4 hours west, Chicago 5.5 hours north, and Detroit is 6 hours north. So as you can see, if you get bored you can get in your car and drive. The base itself has decent facilities and amenities, and housing is new and plentiful. I hope this information is helpful.
