PCSing to Hawaii (Weapons)

I've been doing some research on Hawaii Gun laws, they are not that frindly like here in WA state. I have an AR-15, Glock 19, Taurus PT 380, Springfield 45, Remington 870 shotgun and a Ruger 10/22 take-down. Its true that magazines over 10 rounds are prohibit? Please help from people currently station there or have been in the same situation please!!

If you have them shipped directly to an address on base, you can have them secured in the unit's arms room, until you can work out the red tape to have them in your possession.

It is a long process, but is workable, enjoy the tour and stay safe.

For handguns the answer is absolutely the worst answer I have ever heard…

You take the handgun into the local police station to register it… Worst idea I had ever heard but that was what I was told when we moved there. Not sure on long guns.

I ended up living on post and leaving everything with family.

There are websites and information on post on how to register. Get with your unit sponsor so you know the answer before you go.

CPL Ferrer... sorry to hear that! First, I'll make the prerequisite disclaimer that I'm not a lawyer, and this is only my personal understanding, not legal advice. I would consult with the post MPs for final clarification. With that said:<div><br></div><div>- The NRA legal page (http://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/state-laws/hawaii.aspx) indicates that there is no state "assault rifle" law, only "assault pistols" -- so you should be fine based on the handguns you listed. Make sure your AR-15 was recorded as a rifle when originally purchased... some get recorded as a pistol, and that would make it an assault pistol in Hawaii. </div><div><br></div><div>- Possession of rifle magazines over 10 rounds are OK, but not of pistol magazines. HOWEVER, AR-15 mags are considered pistol mags, since the AR could be used as a pistol (see paragraph above). The NRA ILA gun law page is always a good place to start.

Look up a HI gun owner’s forum and you should be able to find out everything
you need to know.

Find out the law and do your best to follow it. Good advice for everyone (from this MP Officer): Don't consent to any searches or make any statements. Gun laws don't make
sense and can put you in prison if you miss one.

As someone who did bring three guns here, is now leaving and trying to undo the registration. I will tell anyone with weapons to not bring them! I followed the local laws, registered my guns and now the city of Honolulu will not unregister any weapons. I got here early enough to not be in the FBI criminal background system, RAP BACK, anyone that now comes here will pay to be registered into an FBI criminal reporting system. Yes there are other professions such as teachers registered in it, but primarily it is for tracking if criminals are arrested anywhere else afterword. They have no way to get off the FBI system or to deregister the weapons. and HHG will not ship out weapons *** unless they have papers showing the registration. If you love your guns and your civil rights, Hawaii is not for you, only two ranges on the island for the public, hard to find ammo on island, and they regulate the weapons to make it painful to buy or bring here.
