I have a little confusion would love to ask for your advice.
I have talked to the retention NCO and getting my requirements ready until (be E5 position to reenlist, have GT 110, be E5 promotable to go to AIT - 51C school, graduate 51C NLT 2 years from reenlistment). However, I also heard that 51C is not a re-enlistment. This is a must-apply position and be selected by the board selection annually.
Would you please clarify on this matter that Reclassification is for AD component, and reservist have the option to reenlist into 51C without submitting package then selected by the board. Or even after I sign 51C reenlistment, I still need to prepare a package for application to get a spot for the AIT - 51C school?

Also, how long would it usually take for the 51C MOS school? What is the process to transition into the 51C MOS? Is it different for AD versus Reserves?2024-04-22T06:23:51-04:00SPC Private RallyPoint Member8733514

I am planning for my reenlistment into 51C - Contracting NCO. That means you have to be accepted by the branch before you will be allowed to transfer into it. If you meet the prereqs, then you submit an application packet. The packet will be reviewed (in this case, the packet will go before an acquisition selection board) and candidates will be selected from those.

Without regurgitating the website, you can review the entire process and what's involved at the US Army's Acquisition Support Center (USAASC). The ASC has a page* that details the reclassification process and links to the pages with specifics for the Active and Reserve component reclassification programs.

The component specific pages also have contact information for the SME at the ASC who can give you knowledgeable answers to any additional questions.

The bad news is that you've probably missed the window for the FY24 board. You'll have to contact the ASC POC to confirm, but most boards are held close to the same time each year and the FY23 reserve board met in early April of 2023.

However, if you are being proactive and are looking a year+ out already, then you're in great shape and will have more than enough time to put your packet together for the FY25 selection board.
------------------------------------------------
* US Army Acquisition Support Center - https://asc.army.mil/web/career-development/military-nco/field51/
