Should NCOs and OICs be monitoring subordinates on FB?

I think we have more important things to do than snoop around our people

While I don't think it should be mandatory for leaders to check the Facebook page of their soldiers, I certainly don't see anything wrong with it. They posted it on a social media site, therefore they apparently don't care who sees it. (Of course, they can still control who sees what by using the privacy settings in Facebook).

Likewise, soldiers can just as easily check NCO and officer Facebook pages, as well.

The same is true for RallyPoint and other social media sites.

While anything you post online should be assumed to be 'public', I do not believe there is a reason to cyber stalk your soldiers. If there was a report of impropriety of some type, that would change the dynamic (as well as the response), but as a general rule, I would say no. Everyone is entitled to a degree of privacy in their lives.
