According to AFI 36-2903 her bun is out of regs. Also the last time I checked the Air Force does not wear a cover indoors. The military has a standard. When you sign your contract you are agreeing to uphold that standard. When the standard is not upheld you hurt your own organization. You degrade the honor of the military thus you degrade the honor of your country. The military is more than a job, it is a service.

I don't think this is an issue of if WE should take a clue from the Army dress and appearance reg as much as it is an example of bad leadership and wingmanship.

Her hair is obviously beyond the bulk allowed and is falling over the collar, not to mention the wearing of headgear indoors. The hat is probably holding it all together.

First, I have to say that I'm saddened at some of the responses so far. I hope that those weren't the responses that were expected from this discussion.

I don't know enough from this picture to make a specific judgment, but I would be highly skeptical that top AF brass condone this at the level of our AR 670-1. That said, this could be attention to detail on the Soldier's part (cap maybe, hair is a stretch) or lack of discipline by leadership, both NCO and Officer.

More relevant question: What was the purpose of this picture, and what was the corrective action that followed. If proper counseling followed, and this picture was used for documentation, then I applaud the Soldier (but question why pic went public); otherwise, that Soldier is just stirring up drama. Document, counsel, and move on.

There will always be those that try to get away with not following the regulations. It's the job of other Airmen and their leadership to call them out on it. Just because it occurs occasionally, does not mean that it is "allowed".

I'm going to show some support to the Air Force and say this-

Every single branch has service members who cannot follow the regulations, for one reason or another. If that is legitimately how her chain of command allows business to be conducted, then shame on all of them. But let's not just pick on the Air Force, as we've all seen some soup-sandwich looking personnel in uniform at one point or another. It happens, and it needs to be corrected.

While she is obviously 'out of regs' (and I am not condoning it nor offering an excuse), I wonder if she might be in the Air Guard or Reserves where she only has to be concerned for one weekend a month, two weeks per year outside of any deployments or other activation. In some cases, I have seen males that get rather 'scruffy' or 'scraggly' for the rest of the month, and don't try very hard during their duty weekends, and in some cases it is let slide.

My personal opinion, however, is that this is most likely a weave, and something she knows shouldn't fly while in uniform. She can't have achieved her rank without knowing better.

Her leadership has failed her miserably.

We don't need to take a clue. Our regulations practically mirror each other. The Army's update to female hair finally matches ours. If I ever walk into a room & see this, I would have a conversation with the Airman outside the room & give her one hour to report to my office IN proper uniform standards. Next I would have a serious discussion with the ranking person in the room. This is NOT allowed. The few blatant uniform violations are not in any way a good representation of the AF as a whole. Posting a pic like this is only counterproductive since any of us could find pics of our fellow servicemembers poorly representing standards from weight to grooming.

I'm pretty sure this is against Air Force grooming standards and either a failure on this Airmen's leadership or this Airmen is seeing how far she can push the grooming standard.
