I believe most would, but with people hitting the max time in service allowances for the next rank down, not many of us would be allowed. But I bet many would try.

I've often thought that the longer we are "out" of the Service, the more we think, "Man, if only I knew then what I know now"...I'm sure I'd be a heckuva lot better DIV-O, OPS-O today than I ever was in my twenties-LOL!

Maybe there should be a way of organizing a volunteer "Old Guys with Opinions" reserve supporting local active and Reserve bases...Come in periodically to advise, assist and train, with the option of volunteering to be activated when needed.

That said, we'd have to agree to do it all "pro-bono" since there's certainly not funding for us :/

well...instead of come back in, how about not be so quick to put people out.
For example, for promotions - you only get 3 looks between these 3 years only, and if you dont make it, you are put out to pasture.
why dont you move those people to fill some of the critical shortages.
Thus putting some gray area between "no longer competives with peers" and "completely useless."

The issue is that if people have retired they are typically very close to or already at high year tenure. In the event that someone truly wasn't I think they could conceivably come back but we're talking about a very small percentage of the retired population;.

I came back to active duty Nov 2006 and spent a year in Afghanstan and another year at Fort Leavenworth. Same rank with no possibility of promotion, no PT test, no evaluation reports. There were many of us at the time.

I agree with David Lockwood "do retirees want to come back?"...however, I must say that the military was a great career for me and I would come back if call due to all out war. My issue with coming back voluntary is that we will be used to make the numbers that poor planning created. I will explain: every ten years or so it seen that HRC does not get the number of recruits and here they come with marketing program to patch the poor planning of the past. In my case I served near 42 years and wanted to remain in active duty, meeting all my requirements but sorry Chief you got to go I was told by my HRC manager. I was at the prime of my career I could afforded to give the military few years of production due to my position and expertise, nerveless the numbers game was much too powerful. Lack of leadership and poor planning by HRC need to be the next topic of discussion.

I think if you are to come back in, there should be a special pay grade for those that do so. For example. An E-7 should be promoted to E-8r and get payed a little less than an E-8 active and little more than an E-7 active. Just my opinion.

I'm older than 60 on the Reserve side and already getting retired pay so not very likely. Tempting under the right conditions. An O-5 with over 32 years. So the $ wpuld be good. But I have a VA disability on my right shoulder from an injury in Iraq in 2005 and second injury to it in 2011 doing a PRT. Likely not PQ anymore. And then again it's not the same Navy I was in.

Well many of us are physically unfit for duty, but have knowledge that would be useful. Depending on the potential usefulness of older knowledge, I was an instructor and I would be willing to return to those duties if needed. one concern I have is that with the advent of GPS land navigation with a compass has been discontinued. One EMP strike could wipe out all our Computers, GPS, Communications, Vehicles, and Some Weapons. If we cannot use pre computer technology, we we may well be wiped out with out a fight.

I retired in 1994 as a prior-enlisted Major with 24 yrs service. I answered the voluntary recall for my specialty in 2009, fifteen years later, as a 59 yr old. I had to go on the fat boy program, and did several TDYs in the AOR, including Afghanistan. I loved every minute of the two-year gig! Now I'm REALLY retired!

During Desert Storm, the AF had some forced recalls and some voluntary ones for crtical skills, such as EOD. The ones I know that answered the call re -retired at a higher pay grade. A few E-7's retired again as E-8's.
The forced recalls I knew of were all Mid Eastern language specialists.

Gen Pete Schoomaker returned to active duty after 3 years of retirement and served as the 35th Chief of Staff of the Army. There are precedents, but it would need to be on a case by case basis. On the other hand, how does the al Qaeda? Online. Do you have to be a physically fit, 300 PT stud to sit in front of a computer and drive a drone or interdict the recruitment of terrorists? Does the experience and judgment of a 55 year old retired CSM operator warrant bringing him (or her) back to go to Aghanistan where he may be better respected than his younger counterparts? Simple answer- case by case basis.

Of course, now if they got out on disability, i think they should be re-evaluated beforehand. I have heard they currently will make people pay back their disability and go in as "Needs of the Army" which is a waste of time and money in my opinion.

I have thought it would be nice to suit up again but then I had a intelligent thought that said I would be way behind the power curve. Time had past me by. I would also have to have at least two scheduled naps during the day and check in with my wife as needed. I am 68 and in great shape just passed a physical that was perfect. I golf several times a week and shoot in the mid 80's. Maybe my duty could be playing golf with General's. Hmm that is a good thought.

I would say yes as long as they can pass a physical and meet current service physical standards and as lond as they are not collecting disability compensation above 20% which would cease upon readmittance.

As to the rank reduction I have to adamently say no. Many of us went on to hold civilian positions much higher than our former military paygrade.

The real question would be "what benefit do returning retirees bring to the current military mission and how would their return effect advancement"? Do we make Senior NCO Warrant Officers and LDO's?

They can under certain circumstances. A friend, who was/is currently a professor of law at UND and a retired RA CW5, requested a voluntary recall to active duty during Iraqi Freedom. It was granted, he was given a UH-60 transition and sent to the war. Upon termination of hostilities, he returned to being a tenured college professor.
Other retired RA Warrants received requests from DA to be TAC officers at the Warrant Officer School at Fort Rucker to free up Warfighters to go forward to the battlefield.

There certainly was no rank reduction and time served counted towards additional retirement time in service.

Many folks say they would prefer to re- enter the service with a two-rank jump. That would be nice, but is it really earned? If I was asked to re-enter, I would be happy to enter with the rank with which I retired and then earn anything else beyond that. Besides, some of us would have some serious catching up to do. My BFA needs some PT! And if this country needs me back in, then the S has really HTF and we need every swinging Richard we can get.

I carried "hip pocket orders" for the first ten years after I retired. I think during those ten years, I could have came back and been productive. After that, too many changes made and health went down. During periods of war, I believe that retired personnel could really help out. There are a lot of administrative things on post that could be handled by retired personnel. A lot of retired soldiers do miss the service and the bond they had with other soldiers after they retire. The ten year plan they have now is good.

I was voluntarily recalled for Iraq. You come back with your rank, and time in service (for pay purposes) also includes the time you have been retired. However, unless they have changed things, when you are released your retired pay doesn't start back up until they have manually recomputed your retirement pay. In my case it took 90 working days.

I was medically retired with more flags in my file than the united nations, so for me it ain't happening. If they call you back they need you. If you ask to come back and they take you, they need you. At any rate why would you take a reduction in rank? I wouldn't.

Retirees receive retainer pay and are eligable to be recalled to active duty during crisis. I have been retired since 2000 and would not want to return to todays Army where senior general officers bow to political pressure and take a position based on politics in order to advance. Our brighest military officers have been forced out for not following the political line. Those officers made our military a better fighting force. Today's military is a social experimental force which has changed the structure and purpose of of the military, which is to fight and win on the battle field. Retirees should not re enter the military, most would not recognize what they left and would have a hard time adjusting to what has evolved due to political correctness.

Hell no! Think about all the senior people who would come back in! Would they be eligible to promote back up?! If so how would that screw the junior guys that stayed and are trying to promote? How do you compete with a person who already made it once.... Experience, is second only to luck. Do they get extra money for retirement?! mYbe at the junior ranks.... But no thank you

If retirees were to come back in, they should not have to take a reduction in rank, they earned it, they should keep it!!! But it would also complicate their pay status a bit, as they are retired and receiving retired pay, then come back in. That might be a nightmare for the DFAS pay folks!!

If after completing a basic training course and being approved as meeting the physical requirements I don't see why not. Many people retire and regret having done it because they're unhappy and feel unproductive. If you were a member of the Armed Forces I don't see where you'd be able to recover that feeling and usefulness but in the Armed Forces and I don't understand why you would be denied that after putting in all the years necessary to retire.

I don't know about the other services but the Army has a retiree recall program. I served at ARCENT HQ with a couple of retired officers who were recalled in the retired grade. One guy was a LTC in Military Intelligence and another was an Infantry Colonel. Of course this was due to the War on Terror but I recall that in the 1980s we had a retired colonel recalled to be chief of staff at Fort Benning and of course one of the Superintendents at West Point GEN Andrew Goodpaster was a retiree recall in 1977 and GEN Peter Schoomaker was called out of retirement in 2003 to serve as Chief of Staff. There is a phone number for those interested in retiree recall positions on the Army's Human Resources Command website. So in the Army at least retiree being recalled is not all the unusual as there is an Army Regulation governing recalls and most retirees (officers at least) remain eligible for recall until age 62 dependent on their grade.

I think that retirees should be allowed to reenlist. Not at a pay rank lower than they had. Or go back 1 rank lower and within 60 days you have your old rank back. PT would be a issue. I'm retired for medical reasons and I know I can't pass a PT test or a tape and weigh. As for what they would do? Hell that's easy. Put them in office rolls and let the young bucks do the combat thing.

Come back at a reduced rank--not on your life. I worked to long and to hard to the grade I retired at--NO I would not come back at a reduced rank. I've been retired for eleven years now and miss it every day. Not the BS megalomaniac/toxic leaders, but the camaraderie I had with my fellow Airmen.

Once you make the decision to retire and you retire you should not look back. The things we could've, should've but didn't is in our past. I've been retired over 7yrs and I don't regret serving and now being retired. I still interact/mentor with Soldiers but I don't believe that retirees should come back in the military, it won't be the same and you will not be doing any justice to this new Army. Unless your skills are greatly needed then by all means I seen them do it with reservist and National Guardsman.

Anyone who retires before age 60 goes into the Retired Reserve and is subject to recall if the need arises. Those in this category can volunteer to be returned to active status also. I served with a COL who volunteered in 2010 to join our IBCT on a combat tour to AFG, he served as the Bridage DCO and did an admirable job.

I would love the opportunity to come back period at any age . You must be able to meet all the requirements. How much could the Marines or any other branch of the military benefit from prior service members who have matured and reeducated themselves through out the years.I am 50 went back to college,own my own small business compete in cross fit workouts and races I am in better shape now than ever before, and there are many of us out there. . It would be so much easier to re train me then bring some kid in who is just looking for money.

As a matter of personal choice of the Retiree, however, the question is pointless. The Military has only limited authority to permit Retirees to return. If the primary Services had an Auxiliary Corps like the Coast Guard, then this would be a different issue. I doubt many Retirees would come back to work for free; in the Reserves we can't even get people to do things for points only.

You pose two questions. The first refers to retired military who have a wealth of knowledge, including first hand knowledge of combat. As they retire the military loses this valuable resource. It would be wise to find a way to utilize the knowledge and experience they have. Age and physical fitness can impact their ability to perform so perhaps they could be a classified differently and not be eligible for deployment. The retirement of Baby Boomers is creating a huge skills gap in organizations resulting in many companies offering employment opportunities on a consulting basis. It is something the military should also consider. Regarding your question about bringing back retirees at a reduced rank, what purpose would that serve? We all know when you have rank taken away it is a negative thing. It certainly would not be a benefit to those wanting to come back and continue to play an important role in the defense of our country.

If so I think that they should only be in training and administrative roles for a limited period of 2-3 years in cases where they have skills that are in critical shortages. Also I don't think they should have a rank reduction, but they should be put in billets where they won't effect promotion for or be eligible to promote.

I don’t know about retirees in general. I would say yes… within 1 year of ETS or retiring. I served as a Drill during Desert Shield where we put recently trained soldiers (the ones who just got out and were called up) through refresher qualifications, and then they received their orders for just about anywhere you could think of.

They performed well and trained up easily. Most wanted to go back home, but we had some soldiers glad for a second chance to come back in, and wanted to stay active. I hope it worked for them, they were good soldiers.

1) In a the project I am proposing,all branches of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense will join.The different branches will have their own units of the appropiate branch.

I did put in 15 years though, and if I had the opportunity, I would come back in, if I could come back at the same level I was at when I ETS'd. In 1971 with Vietnam still going on a Marine who got out as a SSGT came back in as a PFC (E-2) or LCPL (E3). I heard other Marines complaining about this kick ass PFC in the barracks. WE had a policy for retreads to be watched for excellerated promotions. When they brought back battleships the lack gunner mates retired as E-7 those who came back made E-8 and E-9 in just a couple of years

Retirees can and do return to active duty. I retired in 2007 and was recalled in 2010. There were about 40 retirees in my group at Ft Jackson. What I found most Interesting was that most were going to branch immaterial slots, the only common denominator was that we all had maintained our security clearance.

I believe any one should be free to return as long as they are not dishonorably discharged...they would need to go through a refresher course to bring them up to speed with new tech. or training. It's not going to happen. I tried hard to get back in the Marine Corps when I was 35 years old during Desert Storm, and I was told that I was too old then. I even tried to get into a Marine Reserve Unit and was turned down due to age, and I was still a youngster - did 20 pull-ups, over 80 sit-ups in 2 minutes and ran the 3 miles in 19 minutes and some change at age 39. The Army or Army Guard might be willing to call a retiree back in, but I don't believe the Marines would do it.

Retirees are provided a Pension. This Pension is NOT a "payoff for services rendered". It's more like a retainer. We are a vital part of the FORMDEPS War Plans. Sure we probably can't hump a ruck like we used to do. But I can DAMN sure process SF86's, I can work ATRRS, I can conduct Range duties including marksmanship tutoring. I can do a variety of S-2/3 tasks that would free up a young stud to go forth.

I can only assume that your question is phrased incorrectly.
Can a retiree rejoin the Active rolls? The answer is YES! I was called by PERSCOM back in 2004 (after being retired for a year) to volunteer for a deployment. I have a Cousin that retired and his health was better than mine and he did deploy after being retired for 2 years.

NO Rank reduction is involved. It just takes a recalculation of retirement points when the Soldier returns to Retired status.

With my retirement pay, and my civilian job - I'm sitting very well now as a civilian and I don't have to deal with the politics and bureaucracy of the AF anymore. I'm 50 now, and have been retired just over 2 years. The Commanders wouldn't be able to handle me today - I was always able to speak my mind as a SMSgt - politely and professionally - and most of the time, leadership was very receptive - occasionally someone wasn't. And in this case of an officer or commander not be receptive, I would lose my mind today and inform them how stupid we are being. Nope, even If I could, I would never come back. :)

As a retiree I've been on the fence on this one. I never got the opportunities I really wanted towards the end of my career and now looking back my career really let me down. With the current political situation, I could never go back as there are some policies which I find fundamentally immoral and damaging to military. I did my job and got broken (pins in both legs and lost eyesight in one eye)... They didn't have Wounded Warrior Programs, etc. back then, so you were then considered unable to do your job AND PUT OUT and basically just discarded. What's worse is that the records had been doctored and no benefits. I only had a few years left to retire. I've been an active worker in the real world since with NO issue. I have worked side by side with Post Generals and many other ranks in the work that I do. I've had them say, " the Military needs more personal like you". All I can do is say, "They had us..." At 54, I'd go back if I could and I could show these young ones a few things, but that will never happen thanks to the way we (Veterans in general) are perceived. (grumpy old farts, etc.)

They already can, but I wish they would reduce the criteria to allow a retiree to return to duty. If there is a need to fill a specific skill at a specific rank which is not available through the active force, by all means (as long as they meet the requirements). There should not be a reduction in rank and the individual should be eligible for promotion and/or continued service if they perform well. Instead, their retirement pay should be put on hold until the individual returns to retired status.

I would not come back voluntarily. Too old and decrepit lol. However, unless the regs changed any retiree, unless medically unable, can be called back up until age 62. Retirement pay, as was explained to me during retirement briefs, is really a retainer fee until age 62.

I don't know about the military in general but the US Army has a regulation the outlines the procedures for recall of retired Army personnel, both NCO and officer. AR 601-10 is dedicated to the recall system. Retirees may also volunteer for reinstatement based on the needs of the service. The process is pretty involved so you may want to check out the AR. I think they should be allowed if they meet the requirements for the age bracket one under their current age.

I am too old now but I just don't think that retired solders need to return. Heck, I don't even recognize the uniforms now.

In the 1960's I heard that the USN brought back former Navy Chief's who had retired as E-7's the highest enlisted pay grade in the late 1950's. They were all gunners mates and the Navy was bringing back the battleship for service in Vietnam. They were all promoted under the expanded rank structure to E-8 and some even to E-9 . The story sounded logical to me at the time but I can't verify it's factualness.

I'm pretty sure that I've answered this before but if I haven't I don't see why not. Retirees would bring back their experience and proficiency in their MOS that at the most would have to be brought up to date. My only concern would be for them once they permanently retired. From everything I've heard the retirement package isn't what it used to be and I wouldn't want to see them come out to fewer benefits than they may have gotten when they initially retired.

That would depend on skill, past performance, any need for that skill and Age.
