The value of our US Dollar as a world reserve currency is dependent upon Saudis selling oil in USD only in exchange for our agreement to protect the Kingdom and the Royal Family. When Nixon took us of the Bretton-Woods gold standard Kissinger made the deal with ths Saudis to prop up our fiat currency in the world markets. However the indiscipline of politicians and reserve bankers, coupled with Obama's deliberate overatures to set Iran as the regional leader has the House of Saud looking for other benefactors. The day the Saudis begin selling oil in anything other than US Dollars, all our toilet paper will likely flood back home as an eager global economy dumps the Dollar. The resulting hyperinflation will make the Weimer Republic look like a stable economy. Fiat currencies however have nothng to back them save the promises of politicians that they are worth something. In theory, fiat currencies should work fine so long as those in charge of the printing presses keep the currency supply reasonable low (high demand for limited supply = high market value). Unfortunately, human nature (i.e. greed and averice) coupled with the unaccountable anonymity of bureaucracies leads to over production (imagine if you had a legal printing press in your basement and could print money anytime you needed to pay a bill without anyone questioning you). Therefore, since a fiat currency's value is found in its scarcity, when it is mass produced to the point that it is as common as toilet paper, then that is all it will be worth. As a nation do we do what is practical in an economic and strategic sense or do we do what is morally correct? There are good arguments for both. As for me, I want to take the high moral ground. But I do understand the other half of the debate. Perhapes there is a solution some where in between. Any ideas? We tend to prefer Saudi Arabia/Pakistan over Iran as a principle power in the region, however I believe it's a mistake to gloss over the human rights record of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. Support for such brutal regimes reflects poorly on the US. Saudi is one of the keys to that. I think that's really what it all boils down to. Do I think that's right? No, but the realist in me acknowledges that that's just how it is. To control natural resources is to have power, and people have and will continue to play the game.

It seems like almost any human issue can be boiled down to a struggle over sex and/or power.
