I was in the Navy for three years. I received no military honors. I think that serving is enough of an honor (though it took me damn long enough to realize that). Why do these people feel the need to do this?

How should the situation of Stolen Valor be handled? What is a fair punishment?I believe if you have the guts to pretend that you were this or that in the military then you should have to serve!

I would look to Monty Python for some creative punishment ideas PO3 Steven Sherrill :-)
The Goon Show from British radio with Peter Sellers would also have some very useful input:-)
Personally I would not attack with words of physical force against somebody who is attempting to "steal valor."

It is not stolen valor, imitation yes but stolen is just a name a politician used cause he wanted the recognition for doing something. It does not bother me and I am a disabled combat vet and any one can imitate me.

Although my initial reaction to these cases of Stolen Valor is disgust, I usually try to look a little further. I'd guess many of these people are dealing with mental illness at some level... But then, I just go back to being disgusted.

PO3 Steven Sherrill Your 3 years in, by itself, constitutes a military honor. If anyone says otherwise, please direct them to VFW Post 7400 for corrective consoling.

As to SV, these people are EDP (that's Emotionally Disturbed Person) and as such need to be handled as a public health concern.

However, laughing at them is OK in my book.

I like it. In some states it's more clear and a criminal offense. In others it's just bad taste. This should probably be standardized federally since we are (mostly) talking about impersonating US military, not state military.

First time $2,500 fine
Second time $5,000 fine nad 2 months in jail
Third time $10,000 fine and 3 years in jail

I hate to admit it but I believed one of these phonies who I worked with. He claimed to have risen through the ranks from an Air Force Airman to Colonel & planned a rescue attempt in Vietnam. None of this was true and he was fired by the Company after they learned he had falsified his military service records.

I despise stolen valor as much as anyone, but being outed on Youtube is about as good a punishment as one can get.
